If your Barclaycard account and other accounts are run well, you don't have too much debt elsewhere, etc, Barclaycard consider customers for an upgrade to Gold then Platinum every 12 months. They can also consider you for credit limit increases every 6 months.

Be warned they may only be able to put through an application for Platinum or Classic in branch, not Initial

    EDIT:

This is what I get having just used the tool: (Didn't offer me Gold or Platinum etc)

The website does advertise the Initial card (it's under the 'Credit builder' tab). Looks like they could open that in branch.

It's good that they increase the credit limit every 6 months, and upgrade the card every 12 months. I assume you held the Initial card for quite a while. What card have they upgraded you? How much did they increase your limit after 6 months?

It's odd that they can't open credit cards mentioned on the Barclaycard website, who want to open in branch.

Thanks for your help so far. :)
  • There is a smaller selection of cards available in Branch, as they use a different tool to create your application. The actual decision will be given Yes/No/Refered to Card unit, in the same time as an online application.

The first time I held a Barclaycard I had it for two years. My rate was decreased from the (then starting) 25.9% to 19.9% after 1 year and right down to 9.9% after two years.

This time I held it for just one year. They decreased the APR to 24.9% after six months and then 19.9% after a year but I closed it anyway as they saw fit to decrease my limit to a paltry #300.00 despite using the card regularly and paying off the majority of the balance / limit on a regular basis. I don't think they liked me taking out a Zopa loan to consolidate my cards :D

I used the website and within 2 days, I got a letter, containing an application form and loads of Barclaycard leaflets.

    Ok. Thanks for the insight.

As for using a different tool, that means a different scoring method is done between branch and online?

If I get the 'referred to card unit' decision, what does that entail usually?

I hope they show the selection of cards from the Barclaycard website in branch. It will be convinient for people who like to open it in branch, like me.

The online form on the website is the application form to apply. You should have got a response after that.

Don't know why you got an applicaton for and loads of leaflets through the post. Please explain. :o

Good to hear about the redction within 2 years. Now the Initial card is 29.9%, which is very high! Compared to the credit builder cards like Vanquis and Aqua, Initial is the lowest.

Reducing your credit limit from £1150 to £300 is a bit much really. You should have asked them the reason for that decrease. I hope they don't do this to me. :p

I did the initial check to see if I was likely to get a card. I didn't then proceed with an application.
  • Book,
The actual scoring process is the same, via a credit ref agency and the answers to the questions about income/outgoings.
Yes and No decisions are fairly obvious :) A reffered can mean anything from a slight address mismatch, to living in a 'dodgy' area (postcode, block of flats etc) The application will be looked at by a human who will either approve or deny, they may well give you a call for further information if they cant see what the problem is straight away.
