sky versus virgin broadband

I recently had sky tv installed and was thinking of getting their unlimited broadband and phone package as well but I am worried about the broadband speed compared to virgin (which i currently have)
In our house there are sometimes 4 people surfing at the same time and the virgin service is usually quite good but for various reasons I would like to change
Perhaps some readers would like to share their experiences of sky broadband

The speed you would get with Sky BB depends upon how far you are from your telephone exchange.

You can get an estimate on the Sky broadband site ( assuming you have a BT Land line ) or on Samknows.

PS Sky Connect Broadband( non LLU)is awful and should be avoided.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • How can you tell if it is Sky Connect Broadband( non LLU)?
I know we have a bt exchange

Sky/Easynet will not be listed as LLU operators at your exchange, and Sky will charge you £17 a month for it.

Have you done an exchange search on Samknows?

If the OP is using VM for the phone,it's likely that their phone number won't be in the database used by BT/O2 ect.
    Best bet would be to do a search by postcode on the BT Wholesale link below;
    http://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Community/Broadband_Community/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html#

Just click the links thru to the address or postcode checker.
  • Ive had both and all I can say is stick with Virgin. Sky broadband is rubbish I had it for over a month and it only worked for 3 days then wouldnt connect at all I had engineers visit and two routers and nothing helped. Virgin is much faster reliable not the cheapest but that is my experience

I've been using SKY B.B. unlimited since April and it's been fantastic. Haven't experienced a single problem with it. We use to be with AOL and SKY has been vastly superior. Started off with SKY+ and then changed home phone from B.T. (calls & line rental) to SKY and have saved a small fortune then moved B.B.to SKY. Had no problems with phone or B.B. since we moved over. Wish I'd done it so much sooner.
  • the bt wholesale site says fixed line speed up to 2Mbps,Max broadband 4Mbps range 2.5Mbps to 7Mbps and ADSL2+ 5Mbps
my Virgin speeds on a wireless linked pc with speedtest are down 9.78 Mb/s and up 1.00 Mb/s so no comparison really
    any thoughts ??
    whats adsl2+ btw

What does samknows come up with though?-do a postcode search or exchange mapping and see what line speed that gives you.
samknows will also tell you if ADSL2+ is available on your exchange.
There are other LLU options than Sky most likely.

What Virgin Broadband service do you have?

Are you aware of their traffic management policy?
