In Crisis - Am I missing something?

Hi, this is my first post here, and I'm really hoping someone can help me. I have been browsing for a while and haven't found a similar question.

I lost my job due to redundancy in July and have been claiming Jobseekers since August. My partner works full time earning 800 a month.

We were in horrible council tax arrears from a time when we were both out of work and now we have to pay 250 a month for three months to clear the arrears. We are using my tax credits, (I get his WTC and CTC) to pay this amount and my partners wages go entirely on petrol to travel to work, insurance payments, rent and bills.

We are not concerned about having nice things or giving extravagant presents and have tried really hard to budget this month, but something has gone wrong and my account and his account are both empty. Payday for him is Tuesday and I get WTC and CTC and CB on that day too.

Applied for a Crisis Loan today and was rejected with no reason. What this means is that I can't buy any nappies for my son and we have no gas. Electric is in emergancy but should last until Tuesday.

I don't understand. I went down there with all the receipts for what we had paid and gave all the correct infomation. Why won't they help me? I can't carry on like this, I have gone without for two days now and am starving hungry but I need to ensure my little boy has food first, of course.

Can someone tell me if I am missing something obvious here? I'm at the very end of my tether, hungry, cold and feel like crying.

Find a foodbank near you - this site doesn't lists a lot but not all of them.

If you contact the Salvation Army, they will ensure you have sufficient for items for the weekend. Alternatively, is there no one that can lend you £10?

Borrow from friends or relatives? Cash Converters? Payday loan? Overdraft from bank? Pawnshop? Advance wages paid by company?

Have you tried negotiating a smaller repayment of the CT with the local council to make sure you aren't stretched so much once this issue is resolved?
  • I already have a payday loan and I can't take another one out, I could pawn my laptop, and I might have to. I was hoping to avoid that. I understand that needs must, however. Just so frustrating as it's such a temporary situation.

My partner won't allow me to change the Council Tax repayments...it's a bit complicated but it basically boils down to it being my fault that we are so much in arrears, and any suggestion I have of changing or lowering the payments is met with forceful refusal.

Find a way to get through this weekend. After that, start increasing your income until you are up to date on your debts. A good place to start is ebay, it is amazing what people buy ... and you get to declutter in the process.

DX2's comment was very helpful. If you are unable to feed your child, you clearly need additional help. Social services can provide this, and it does not have to mean putting your child into care.
