I was advised to use v power or high octane unleaded as it is 'cleaner' and having been using it for about 9 / 10 motnhs
the topic is named car failed mot ,not I've been using my car for 9 months without mot
maybe they should have said My car failed it's mot TODAY
where does it say he hasn't had an mot for 9 months ????????????
some of you replying are so quick to jump down people's throats ,
try reading the dam. topic twice before replying !
to the original poster ,you could try the Italian tune up . give it a bit of welly to help clear the cra. out of the system ,it may help0 -
Can we get the Make/Model/Year and the emissions readings? Without those it's all going to be speculation.0

There is no smoke or obvious discharge and the car is old but
is there anything else I can do to prevent this happening again.
Buy a new engine/injectors/cat (delete as applicable).0 -

Practice what you preach.
Rev_Henry was just asking a perfectly reasonable question, the OP gave the impression the car had failed its MOT for emissions and for 9/10 months he's been trying to sort them with the fuel used.
After his own dummy spitting excercise, and a more concise description of the problem, it turns out it's just had a pre mot check and the emissions dont look good. (that means it's not failed it's MOT yet, read the damn posts).0 -
MOT is due on wed and its in for a pre MOT check, they have said it will fail on emissions.
OP is probably not reading this any more, but that line sounds a bit like some sales crap that dodgy franchised garage chains come out with in order to scare the punter into having hundreds of pounds of replacement parts fitted unnecessarily.
I was once told (at a 'free brake check' or similar) that my shock absorbers were knackered and leaking fluid, that brake pads were worn out and (amongst other things) there was no chance the car was going to pass its MOT. They came up with an estimate of over £300 to fix the various problems. I took the car away to a garage miles away owned by a friend of a friend. The car passed its MOT and any work needing doing was advisory.0 -
An air leak on the brake servo will get your C02/hydrocarbons down to whatever you want, can always get it fixed properly later.0

I read it as 'car failed MOT but have been using high octane fuel for the past nine months'.
I fail to see where anyone would think the OP had been driving for nine months without an MOT.0
