Ignore the above, it is completly wrong.

Not having a valid VED does NOT invalidate a MOT
Not having a valid VED does NOT invalidate your insurance

    You 100% sure of that?

I've always heard it nulls your insurance

I'll repost this in case you missed it

Did you know that not having car tax invalidates your motor insurance?

A lot of people don’t realise that if they ‘forget’ to renew their road tax when it runs out – or don’t purchase it at all – then their car insurance is null and void. If they are involved in an accident while untaxed, then they will essentially be uninsured and will be subject to all the consequences as described above. Even if they have been paying their car insurance, it won’t make any difference – you’re still guilty of committing a criminal offence.

  • Get the car dealer to tax it using his traders policy. If it's a trader you are buying from.

Interesting but conflicting advise. Ill phone my trader in the morning and see what he can do. If nought iv a decision to make as I need to get my own car to him tomorrow.
  • THis is also going to be a major problem for many more people when the new law comes in requireing insurance or sorn, not as many cars will be sold with any tax left.

Yes, 100% sure. Just because you found a link to a website that has incorrect information doesn't make it so.

An MOT certificate once issued is valid until it expires, nothing will change that.

Not having valid VED does not invalidate your insurance. Once you have an insurance policy in place, its valid until cancled by the insurer. The insurer may decide for various reasons not to pay second party claims, but the legal requirement of third party cover will be in place.

Trust me, I spent a decade working in insurance....

In other words, don't believe all you read on the internet.
  • Its also worth noting that not having a valid VED is a civil matter, it will the DVLA who take you to court, not the CPS.

And while we are at it, not having a valid MOT does not invalidate your insurance either - the insurer may refuse to pay out on a claim, but once again the legal minimum requirement of third party cover will still be in place.

Also note that just because a car has a valid MOT does not mean it is roadworthy.

Just needed to get that off my chest :)
  • Not saying that you should but when I bought my car second hand it had no tax. I drove it 300 miles home and didn't get caught so...
