Speeding fines and Insurance
Hi there,
I'm hoping somebody can advise what the current situation may be for me and my girlfriend for a speeding fine recently received.
Basically, we both have our own cars and we are both fully comp insured. However on this evening the ticket was issued, she was driving my car with me in it. She was caught out on average speed cameras going 58mph in a 50mph. She's OK to take the blame, but she's worried something might crop up with the insurance, as she thinks she wasn't covered for the journey. Will they look in to insurance or do they just want their money? We've both been driving for over four years each and have clean licenses. Unfortunate really...
Thanks

Why does she think she wasnt covered for the journey?make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I'm with McKneff.
Why would this question even crop up? Or is there something more to this?0 -
Most fully comp policies cover you to drive any car 3rd party with the owners permission.
Is your girlfriend not a named driver on your policy? Having two drivers always makes the overall policy cheaper.
For info i got 3 pts for the same offence in 2007 and it has made no difference to my renewals. The insurance company said it would only make i differnece if i got 6pts and so proved to be a habitual speeder.Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.0 -
It stated on her policy that she isn't insured to drive any other vehicles, but she rang them today (Tesco) and they stated she would be covered if she was over 25, which she isn't. So i guess she thinks, has now confirmed she's not. She's also not a named driver as she rarely drives it. I guess i was just hoping for someone who may know abit more about it than me and her, will the road safety bureau look into things further or do they just want to issue a fixed penalty notice and get it out the way with?0

I doubt they'll look into it. If you're worried I suppose you could take the points yourself.0

I heard the insurance companies are phasing out this "3rd party on another policy" rule. I am 25 and im pretty sure my fully comp policy doesnt cover me to drive anything else.
I dont know the answer to your question about whether the DVLA will say anything about her driving your car or not. I doubt they can know what cover either of you have can they? that's between you and your insurers... however if a police officer pulled her they would know what cover she has (ie. none)
I guess in future you should add each other to each others policies so you know its ok. As people have said, it may save you some £££0 -
Thanks for all yr advice people! She's sending off the form today and hopes she'll just receive the fine/points whatever they decide. I'll try to remember to update this thread with the outcome (if anybody wishes to know the outcome).0

Very, very bad advice. This is perverting the course of justice and the courts take an extremely dim view of it. Jail terms are not uncommon for people who pretend someone else was driving, and the police can often find out by looking at the photograph.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -
I don't think they will ask, I've had two speeding penalties over the years and don't remember them asking to see proof of insurance. Whether they do a computer check though I'm not sure.
I did the same thing years ago, presumed I was covered as I was fully comp, but I was only 22yrs old, luckily I didn't get stopped and after borrowing the boyfriends car for 2 weeks I got mine back from the garage and suddenly realised.. ! Never again!9/70lbs to lose0
