Have you not read the thread?

    Yes. I shall walk.

Maybe I could use my pushchair to put computers in?

Why is life just so god damn plain simple for you?

I must admit I have never agreed with you but sometimes it is not possible to walk or ride a bike to work.

Petrol prices have got bad now. i vote that we should all start a revolution! go down to the houses of parliament and take over! it worked for Russia! these big wigs and bankers have no idea what us poor folk up north have to deal with.

Starting a revolution won't change the fact that oil is a finite resource. If you want to blame someone, blame the countries that are vastly expanding their oil consumption, i.e. China, India and the oil exporters themselves.

I hope there is an alternative Graham, because the era of cheap oil prices is never going to return.
  • To give the Tories credit (did I just say that...?) I don't blame them for the increased prices. There is only a finite amount any government of any colour can do when crude oil prices are rising and the exchange rate is unfavourable. Any change Oik wants to make to the duty rate (and lets be clear - he's only going to do a few pence) can be wiped out at the pump just as quickly by things he doesn't control.

So with respect to the protestors, I can't see what they hope to achieve. Its not like prices are uniquely high in the UK - our unleaded prices are middle of the EU pack and lower than most of the big countries. OK so diesel is expensive here, but thats partially duty and partially our lack of refining capacity which forces us to import finished product from the continent.

In 6 weeks the duty on fuel is going up, and if you take the adjustment for inflation plus 1% we should change this thread to £1.45 -litre!

I took a drive out today, talking of people on bikes I nearly saw a motorcyclist fall off as his motorbike seemed to be having problems on one 33% U-bend, I think his mistake was tucking it right into the corner where it's more like a 50% gradient. I've tried cycling these roads, it's perpetual up/down/up/down, with 25-33% gradients every mile or so, roads so narrow only one car can go through at a time and no protection from raging crosswinds.

Not everywhere's flat and lovely, some areas are wild, remote and hilly.

I think the only serious alternative that'd suit more people, would be to flood the market with cheap 3-wheeler, stable, 50cc scooters, with a nice platform for your feet and a perspex windscreen. More stability on a 3-wheeler than a 2-wheeler; can go further/faster on a 50cc moped than on a bike. Doesn't have to be "trike/triangle shaped", rear wheels could just be 6" apart.

My car does MPG not MPL!

How much is petrol PER GALLON?

Do you notice how we have been very cleverly weaned away from realising the TRUE cost of petrol?

How about price per ml, next? :)

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Got to admit, I've not read the whole thread.
I just relayed some options that previous generations and current generations have used to get to work.

I know quite a lot of people that have a 40-50 mile commute to work and get into car share schemes.

    There are always options.

You can make it simple and not complicate everything in life Graham ;)

You can make it simple yes.

But you keep wanting to apply a one stop shop to everyone.

So you can make it too simple. Which is what you are doing, by giving suggestions everyone already knows about, but as everyone works differently, doesn't always apply to.
