  • I would like to live by this maxim- one of the Dalai Lama's sayings. I need to change my habits as well.

Through constant familiarity, we can definitely establish new behavior patterns, using our tendency to form habits to our advantage. If we make a steady effort, I think we can overcome any form of negative conditioning and make positive changes in our lives. But we need to remember that genuine change doesn't happen overnight.

So a note of positivity. :) He is rather good at positive statements.

I mean i am paying over that off the joint debt and the mortgage as that is what i budget to with my account. Which made me very heartsick to think i am kind of wasting my time.:o I am so glad i didn't put any money into the overdraft as i reckon he would have had that as well. So i am not sure where he has been spending,

    Maybe you should find out.
it is one of those dribs and drabs things. He does mightily play up those dribs and drabs though.

Six hundred quid is a lot of dribs and drabs. It's a nought to liver failure kind of night-out for example...

Some of the spends was on my birthday and valentines day. Although he did tell me he had a voucher from M&S for the meal for two, he had £20 voucher so not sure what he said he spent on as the meal deal is about that..
My birthday present was £30. Meal out which i went halves on and the DS and DD chipped in as well..was about £10 each.

Still shows a long way re spends to recover. I may have missed something but a lot of £10 notes were drawn out.

Some of it may be accounted for with the cross over period. Bearing in mind that he was paid early in December then next wage was at the end of January. So i understand the statement date may well not be a true reflection of monies in and out in that respect, from his way of thinking about his travel etc.

I know he gets tired during the day so buys himself a hot meal and drink which soon mounts up.

I will dig out three months worth of statements and see how it all pans out. Although the fact that the overdraft is creeping up is indication of exactly what is and isn't being spent.

Six hundred quid is slightly over £21 per day, every day, including Sundays.

Edit: £21 quid over and above the break-even budget.

Don't focus on what is being spent, to the detriment as to what is being bought.

he talks sense that one ...
  • I appreciate that Z and put in those terms it is quite shocking.

The way i figured it, after his half of household bills and his essential spends such as travel (and then paying off his credit cards) he should have £550 left. Out of that i put a rough entertainment budget of £50 spends. His food should come out of household budget and in theory any extras can be paid out of his entertainment. Am i being too strict with this budget?
I reckon that should leave £500 to come off the overdraft. Or even £400 would have been good.
So i was shocked at £600 overspend because he was not living within his wages. He has argued he is only £50 over, which is a big improvement on the past and i can see his argument, but not his excuse as to why the spending is so high especially as everything is covered.
