Sounds like going to the butchers was a good idea i dont find asda etc much cheaper than a butchers but the quality of a butchers is much much superior for some reason ....

It's because little butchers can't afford the machines which inject water into meat. Supermarkets can.

I also ( being the community anarchist that i am ) like to put the money back into the community as much as possible

Nothing wrong with that, but it all eventually ends up in London anyway, HM Revenue and Customs...

I don't think its anarchism, El! It really does boost the local community to spend locally, when others do too. One of my topics at poly was economic history (Oh I did enjoy the opening sentence of the Communist Manifesto :D) and there was a phrase there thats stuck with me - the velocity of money, about how speeding up the number of exchanges creates prosperity - if you get a £ and put it in the bank, thats it. If you spend that £ at the local shop, and they spend it at the local chemist, and they spend it at the local baker, the velocity has .... quadrupled, or something .... and all the participants have gained. Win-win!

I did that at university too, along with "proper" economics. Hated the history side. If I never see another canal again...

Is it? Don't the banks do that business investment thing with it? Which means we accumulate capital which is used in production, rather than consumption which is used in consuming.

Are you sure a lack of demand for holding money is a good thing?

I revisited economics about 15 years after uni as I suddenly had some free time to burn. Transpired that pretty much all of it past Demand/Supply curves and marginal costs/utility was pretty much garbage which should have been put into a separate course called "Politics".

Oh well, you live and learn. I did pass the course, and made a fairly spot-on prediction during the final exam about the mechanics of the pound being ejected from the ERM, (showing my age...) so not all bad.

  • And who says you don't learn anything on MSE?:D Thanks for that KC and Z.

Well today is a good day as i have broken up for hols:D Have a mound of paperwork to do and would really like to go to a certain North Easterly meet. Hoping i can make it.:D

Spends wise- that would be a grand total of £8 from personal budget. Was asked to buy something for school and that will be refunded later on. I blagged a free trip for one of my students so was a good day there :D Just chilling and having a catch up.

    Off to update totals.
