If its about two years ago then if I remember rightly they did nothing about the SORN then...it's really only since last year that they have started to enforce it.

I have two Motorbikes that were never Sorn because at the time this didn't exist.

it says I have 3 things I need to do

    1) pay a penalty of £40

2)license the vehicle if being used

3)pay the arrears of duty calculated = £18.34

now this may be stating the obvious here but want to make sure.....have I got pay both 1+3...totalling £58.34?or is it just the first one?

the car is now going to be declared sorn and not used.....

I think you will have to pay the £58.34. You need to pay the outstanding £18.34, and pay the fine of £40 for not keeping it taxed. I'd declare the vehicle SORN ASAP so you are not charged further.

    I absolutley agree dougk!

So how is it fairer that someone living in the country miles from anywhere with no public transport has to pay more?

Anyway the tax disc is more about making sure that the authorities know who the owner of the car is, than collecting tax these days.

You choose to live in the country and therefore use the roads more and therefore cause more wear and tear..... Public transport is a valid point however and we have only the Tory government who devalued this to blame.

I lived in the country too for 12 years and I would have not worried me as I benefited in other ways - lower council tax (parish rate lower as no street lighting), cheaper property & cheaper rental prices, cheaper insurance and better living conditions (in my view).

Insurance discs and/or MOT discs as used in other countries would serve the same purpose and work better.

Most people don't choose to live where they do, it is just circumstance.

Council tax is not cheaper as you end up paying the parish tax on top of the county and district tax, and get less services for it. As for property prices in rural areas being cheaper than in the neighbouring industrial towns?

For both insurance and an MOT disc you don't have to prove you own the car, with a tax disc you do.

if your car has been off road for 18 months i would have imagined they would have contacted you before now .. i know they are not slow in contacting people if they think they will get money from them...

and on the tax side, i live 6 miles from a major city and the bus fares are astounding , for me and a child to get a return fare would be over £5.. public transport is a joke trying to get to scotland to see a sick relative no trains during the night not planes no buses only thing was to use my car or miss the chance to say goobye. taxed to the hilt dont they just love it
Those we love don't go away,They walk beside us every day,Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear
Our thoughts are ever with you,Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly,
    Are thinking of you today.

You have the choice - you can move! Many people choose to live in the country also...it is a choice no-one forces you live in a rural area.
Public transport is not cheap anyway and its often cheaper to drive and pay to park.

You still pay a Parish tax in the towns - this is usually higher than the rural parish tax. Prices are generally cheaper in the rural areas than the city centres.... compare Norwich to the small villages within 20 miles around for example. Industrial towns are dying hence the reason for the cheap property prices.

The MOT disk part can be asily solved (as it is abroad) you could still collect a tax disk from the post office by providing the relevant documentation or have to produce the documentation at the time of MOT. There are alternatives and if they work elsewhere they would work here. :)
  • Firstly I can't believe that anyone would suggest that somebody else MOVE just because they have a problem with transport! It's never that simple - especially if the person has children, thier own house or that little thing called a job. Try to find something you are not happy about with your environment and see if you would make that choice!

As to the Road Tax/MOT question, I believe there are plans to issue MOTs at the Post Office, when you get your tax (with a pass 'reciept' issued at the test station to prove your car has passed its test). My eternal worry with these kind of e-documents is that fewer actual human beings involved with a process, the easier it is to fake one of them. Car Tax is still issued as long as you have the log book (VRD), MOT cert and insurance cert, even if you don't have a reminder. How does this prove who the owner is? You don't even have to fill out a paper form now and give a signiture, it's all done through the system over the counter, with the bar code on the Tax Disc being entered in the system at the time of issue. I can't imagine there will be any change in this, as at least the goverment can still get £165 off a person for Road Tax, even if they don't bother registering the car in thier own name.

I am convinced that there is a huge rise in unregistered vehicles in London after the advent of the Congestion Charge and after the Police stopped being concerned with Road Tax. You just have to look around you when sat in traffic. I see two or three every week, sometimes more.

Untaxed cars is one thing we don't have a problem with anymore. Operation dodger was set up, they do a regular sweep and it's great fun watching all the untaxed cars being towed away, some beauties go sometimes and I'm so tempted to ask if I can have it if I pay the tax. :D

Sorry for hijacking this thread (for what it's worth, growing up in the country was great in some ways, but living as an adult in a town where there are buses more than twice a week is good too - it balances out), and I'm sure this has been answered before, but:

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to afford to keep running my car once the tax and insurance become due in August. If I declare SORN (as it is on a driveway sans battery which was stolen), does it still require 3rd party insurance? I'd like to have some idea in advance. Cheers
