Has it been used for anything else?0

No never used that input for anything else (and don't have owt else to test it with).
The microsystem has a accompanying ipod dock but that goes in a different input. The input is marked Tape/ MD (its a japanese system so I guess they didn't figure on someone wanting to use a turntable with it).0 -
if it has more phone inputs, try a different input
All these connections are rca phono, from turntable to preamp to amp?!!

As you have swapped the leads at output of pre amp and the dead speaker remains the same you have proved that both outputs of pre amp and everything before are ok.
by swapping the leads at micro and the speaaker changing you have proved it's that plug if it was micro dead speaker would have stayed the same.0 -
swap a cable at a time to find out!!

If the TT has a captive lead, then it sounds like (since you've plugged it into the iPod input with the same result) that there's a few possibilities;
The cartridge is faulty
The cartridge leads aren't connected to the tonearm cable
The tonearm cable is faulty
The captive lead is faulty
Where/who did you buy the turntable from? Is it under guarantee? Was it posted to you? Could it have been damaged in transit?
Look at the four leads at the back of the cartridge. Do they look intact? Are any of them disconnected?0 -

The original poster has a phono amp and has swapped the leads between that and micro system.
First he swapped at phono amp end and the same speaker worked this proved he was getting an output on Left and right phone outputs.
Then he swapped at Micro end and the working speaker changed proving it was the lead if the speaker had stayed the same it would indicate a fault with the Micro system.0 -
Hey
To all those who replied- thank you, your input was invaluable.
I bought a new lead yesterday and now it works. Whoop!
Cheers all
