Theft from hotel room

Stayed at the Marriott in Glasgow over the New Year where unfortunately my son's new laptop was stolen from our hotel room. The hotel provides a safe in each room where our small valuables were stored but it isn't big enough to occupy a laptop. Instead it was stored in the desk drawer. We know exactly the time period the laptop was removed from our room and the initial hotel investigation found a key registered to a member of the housekeeping staff had entered our room throughout this time. The incident was also reported to the police, although we had to insist this since the hotel manager was not too keen. Today I received a letter from the hotel which states they interviewed the staff member who denies seeing or removing a laptop so won't be taking this matter any further.
Do I have any comeback or is this an expensive mistake I have to take on the chin?
BTW have approached both home and travel insurers, neither will compensate the loss since there was no evidence of forced entry:(

You sure you son hadnt removed it and sold it,
just want to ask but why wait till now to post, if it was me i would have posted when i got back
im not being rude, i just find it odd it was left 10/11 days for you to post(maybe theres a reasonable explanation)0 -
Unfortunately, you are responsible for leaving your valuable belongings in your room. Most if not all of the hotels don't take responsibilities for such theft. They expect you to lodge those items that don't fit in your hotel room's safe at the reception for safe-keeping. Take a look at their terms and conditions, but I don't think there is much you can do.0

I would be insisting that the police take it further (and also double checking with your son, it is not unheard of!).Gone ... or have I?0

The hotel cannot exclude all liability, irrespective of what they write in their terms and conditions. However, whether they are liable or not is open to question.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Not everybody's chomping at the bit to whine online 2 minutes after an event's occurred, they trust that things will come good.0 -

And it's taken 10 days or so to get to this impasse stage, which is the point at which a new person might appear.

Def not son, he's a none too street wise 10 year old !!
Thanks for comments...first time in using these forums. Thought it be worthwhile getting others opinions. I had relied on the Marriott at least giving us a goodwill gesture since we are regular customers and never had any complaints in the past. You live and learn!0 -

Oddly enough I had the same thing with a CD Walkman happen at the Manchester Marriott many a year ago - sounds like they should be more careful when recruiting staff! I would still pursue it further with the police - the hotel should have CCTV which they can check (whether they want to or not!).Gone ... or have I?0 -
I'd kindly remind them that bad press in the local and national newspapers wouldn't be good business for the hotel or the Marriott brand.0
