My daughter's much wanted first baby's due in 5 weeks. I just can't wait to meet him or her (she didn't want to know what she's having) and I'm so excited about it.:j
I want to buy a few things for baby but not knowing the baby's sex is holding me back. I've seen some lovely little boy and girl outfits and don't really want to buy neutral things and colours.:)
I'll wait till baby's here to buy most of the stuff but I do want something to take with me to the hospital when baby's born. And is it best to buy, say, age 3 to 6 months rather than newborn?
Any suggestions please?

It is very exciting getting things.
I would suggest only getting one or two outfits as that is what lots of other people tend to buy. Definitely 3 - 6 months, or even 6 - 9 months (but remember to think about the seasons.)
If you have plans to buy her anything else then I would suggest having a chat with her and if you can stretch to a pram or a cot, these are traditionally items parents give (they are in the baby groups I have been in for the last 7 years). If something smaller, then maybe a nice cot mobile, bouncy chair, etc.
Good luck0 -
I wouldn't take a size 3-6 babygro to the hospital TBH. Baby won't be in it for weeks and your daughter will have loads to drag home as it is.
What about a toy for the baby's Pram or car seat?I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

Thinking back to when my son was born, I'd bought hardly anything in newborn or 0-3 months as nearly everything I read said that people will buy you these things when the baby arrives. I had 3 vests and 3 babygrows in newborn, and it turned out everyone bought us clothes in 3-6 and 6-9 months! DH had to go out and buy baby some clothes as soon as we got home. Not that we were relying on gifts, but people had said they had bought a little something for the baby to wear, so I assumed it must be that size. I would have loved something in newborn so baby could wear it straight away - so I would say buy this size. If not newborn (usually fits up to around 9lbs-ish), then 0-3 months, you can't go wrong with that, not heard of a baby coming out too big to fit this size!0

Someone was telling me yesterday that someone bought a fancy party dress for her daughter in size 0-3. The baby won't be needing party dresses for at least a year! What a waste of money!I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I once saw (on a different forum) an outfit someone bought their son home from the hospital in.... it was a tiny newborn sized tuxedo (!!) The baby looked so annoyed and uncomfortable. Poor little mite.
To the OP, what about a soft toy or something similar? Jellycat have a GORGEOUS range of soft toys that are really reasonably priced and nice quality. My daughter adores her Bashful Lamb and my sister has just bought a Jellycat toy for my son (due in 7 weeks).
Available in John Lewis, and I am sure other places.
If you want to buy clothes, there is a sale on at Jojo Maman Bebe and they have some colourful unisex sleep suits that are gorgeous - check out the website

I was given a beautiful soft blue pram blanket by a friend who visited me in hospital when my littlest was born. We also didn't know sex in advance. We were able to use it to keep him warm on journey home and more than a year later it's still in use, and the friend who gave it is remembered every time I see it.0

Hello OP,
Something I really LOVED having for my babies - and I have had babies of both genders - is nighties. Do you remember little soft white cotton nighties with long sleeves? So easy to put on, easy for nappy changing, soft, comfortable and guaranteed to make any new baby look adorable...you only need a vest and a cardie and that's it. Baby comfortable and snuggly, adoring parents and grandparents knocked out by how easy it all is.
The other thing that was a fantastic present was hand knitted cardigans. My grandmother went to the trouble of knitting several for my second and third babies, and they were very much appreciated. Made from white or cream yarn which could be washed and tumble-dried easily, with darling little buttons. (nostalgic sigh)
You might also want to give your daughter a hat for her baby - my DD got very cold shortly after birth, and the first thing the midwife did was to put her little knitted hat on to raise her body temperature.
Just a few thoughts....HTH. Best of luck and congratulations on the forthcoming bundle - lucky baby to have such a loving gran.

Nice soft toy, i second jellycat too. My boys both have one and now sleep with it all the time. Or a nice blanket. New babies look lovely in just plain white.
Save the pink/blue outfit for when they both come home
bigger size definantly good idea. also a gift for new mum

My mum bought a newborn boy and newborn girl outfit each time I was pregnant a couple of weeks before my due date from M&S, kept the receipt and returned the one we didn't need

Loads of people buy 3-6 months clothes but in reality lots of newborn / 0-3 babygros are perfect. Also second the nighties - so much easier to change a nappy in the night0 -
Thanks everyone, some fantastic ideas there. I love the pram blanket or shawl suggestion and jellycat for a soft toy is good too.
But I hadn't thought of getting a boy AND girl outfit and just returning the one we don't need!!!
Just going to have my cuppa then off to town brandishing my beleaguered plastic...!!0
