Sounds like its an issue with your car or you.

    I have:

    1) Ford Capri with filler neck a mile wide and not designed to be used with a high speed pump

    2) When I've been a tit, pulled the nozzle out a bit and trying to get that last drop in and brim it beyond sensibility.

When it has never done it is when I shove the nozzle all the way in and hold the handle until it clicks off - like you're supposed to.

Seen an escort van driver trying to fillup with diesel at the HGV fast fill pumps, More went on the floor than
in the tank, I said the pumps too fast for his small van but he told me to * off.

So i just stood there laughing at him instead.

I don't see a phone in that video at all...... Sounds to me like the guy was doing something he shouldn't and used to phone as a coverup.
Why does he go into his pocket, take something and then hold that object over the open hatch?

    How about this

Or i'll get technical shall I?

A mobile phone typically runs from a 7v lithium ion battery, this is simply not capable of generating a spark that would ignite petrol.

True, it seems to be one of those rules made up for the sake of it.

Mythbusters busted the mobile phone at petrol stations myth wide open... twice.

I've never had this problem. It's quite easy to listen to the sound and know when to stop pumping fuel!
  • seriously the spillage would've probably cost pennies, it's just not worth it!

I didn't see anyone earthing that tanker before they opened it. I would think that was more likely a static charge!

Ooh, technical ... now I'm worried :rotfl:

You are demonstrating exactly the problem - people who don't know enough to realise how much they don't know, and then believe that they must be right and any so called 'experts' are wrong.

A mobile phone typically runs off a 3.6V battery lithium ion battery, and several of them are capable of generating several thousand volts required to strike the xenon lamp for the camera flash. Yes, thats a rarified atmosphere, but it's a spark. If you want to see how much energy is stored in such a battery try drilling a hole in it (not advisable!).

A handheld mobile causing an explosion is incredibly unlikely, but adding risk to a dangerous environment can't be a good idea.

Come on then, you're the expert, whats the limit - what equipment shouldn't you be allowed to use on a forecourt. How do you police it, in the face of the hordes of idiots who think they know better?

Now, when you got the answer to that, don't publish it here - go and explain to the large industry efforts around Atex regulations why they are wasting their time and how you can make them all rich.

Even a lit cigarette has been confirmed not to ignite petrol (despite what Hollywood tells us), however smoking is banned at petrol stations because a lighter WILL ignite petrol....

You can't say to people its ok to smoke at petrol stations, but lighting a fag is banned.... People are just too stupid for that!
