Could be a blessing in disguise. He'll avoid living under the crushing debt of student fees for a mickey-mouse degree. And while inside he'll learn a range of useful skills (card-skimming, TWOKing, benefit fraud,...) that'll be essential in jobless, broken, Britain

The only downside he'll be 18 months behind his peers in getting a chavette up the duff and starting the CB benefits train rolling.

in other news: the 19yr old scumbag who burgled 3 properties in my area last august, threatened an 89 yr old lady and thought he'd got away with a £3000 'haul' ended up with a 9 month detention centre order. (oh, and he's served for 'previous').

Yeah, this is the sort of thing that I'm uncomfortable with as well. In the context of other offences, the sentence seems huge.

It's all very well saying he deserves it for his actions, but when you compare it to some other sentences handed down to the scum of society it doesn't really stack up.

    Exactly.

Probably the posters in this thread being happy about the sentence or even calling for a harsher one are those holier-than-thou types who never put a foot wrong all their lives.
Who went through puberty and adolescence without doing anything reckless, stupid or dangerous.

The young man's action were absolutely idiotic and he was indeed "lucky" that no one was injured or worse. However, I do think that he is being made an example of and the sentence IMHO is too harsh. Keeping him incarcerated for that length of time is in excess of what would have probably acted as sufficient punishment and will cost the nation thousands of £££s.

My understanding was that for a charge of "violent disorder" to be proven there had to be an element of premeditation & that a charge of affray could have dealt with this one. (still serious but with a lower max sentence)

Anyway, just for length of sentence comparison, here's a few others who have been prosecuted under a charge of Violent Disorder , albeit in different circumstances - the difference here is that some of these offenders did actually cause physical harm to others:

A previous poster has already mentioned the corresponding lack of action against the police in Ian Tomlinson case.

    Life ruined. A shame really.

Could have been a life ended. Not a shame at all at that age you would hope he could understand right from wrong?

Or that dropping that on someone from that hight would kill someone.

anyone doing such a stunt should be jailed, he deliberatly risked lives.

    Could have...could have...
    But it didn't.
Do we send people to prison now based on 'could haves'?
I drove 40 the other day in a 30 zone. I could have killed someone, but I didn't. Accordingly, I should be punished for doing 40 and not attempted murder.

...but no injury or death in fact ensued in this case. As Wheezy says, it shouldn't be about a heavy focus on the "could haves".

Many people (other than you apparently) are capable of realising that it is a "shame" when someone takes the "wrong route", especially at the start of their adult life.

No its not. Lets not !!!!!foot here. Personal responsibility is something we have lost. The law, and incarceration, are just as much about deterrent as they are about punishment.

About time lefties !!!!!! and started to realise its about time they started taking responsibility for their own actions, rather than blaming others.
