Tax credit is NOT a benefit hence why this forum is called benefits & Tax credits not just Benefits. It is essentially a rebate on tax in order to help people on low incomes.

edit- I chose to pay half towards my dads and father in laws suits as that is how I wanted to spend my saving money. When I decided to do that I was in a better financial situation and the tax credits hadn't messed up my claim. So I thought I would be able to keep my savings for the wedding.
But now you can't afford it, why can't you just explain this to them and get them to pay for their own clothes?
This is intended to be a helpful and practical solution to your problem!0 -

Granted. However I am and so is my fiance and I have been since I was 16 so I resent being made to look like I am spending my taxcredits on a wedding when if you read into it that is not the case. I also resent being made to look like a benefit scrounger who doesn't work which i feel was implied with " why are you buying people's clothes if you are on benefits"0 -

Because my father and his father would not of spent £100 each on a suit. I picked them suits and so I cant expect now to put this cost on them, they are already paying half and my dad is paying my younger brothers £85 for him. I also cannot cancel as I will lose £344 which I have already paid.
I will be thinking of asking my maid of honor to pay for her dress, but I do feel cheeky.0 -
Can you get a loan from a credit union? I expect many will expect you to be a member with a history of saving before they give out a loan but do check. Your fiance is working so what are they paying for? If they are in full time work, and have a stronger credit history can they arrange an overdraft or loan to help to pay the balance of their wedding?
There is a wedding forum on MSE so they may be able to give you further advice on thrifty strategies there.
Perhaps if you feel obliged to pay for clothes you promised to pay for but are not in a position to do it, do you think the recipients would mind paying for them now and being refunded from you when your financial situation improves? Of course, 'loans' between friends/relatives are fraught with problems from mixing money with relationships but its a possible option.
Whatever the hassle now, I'm sure the day itself will be fantastic and none of the historic aggro will be remembered on the day as you have fun with your closest friends and family.0 -
Is the problem with the tax credits stemming from the fact that it ended in October? So, you didn't renew last year, and didn't do anything about it till the money stopped coming in?
You do need to renew your tax credits each and every year for paymens to continue being made. If you don't, exactly as has happened to you will happen again.
It's annoying to see comments above like the 'tax credits taking the p for taking so long to sort it out', when if it's a case of someone not renewing.......it's hardly TC taking the p is it?
I know you've put alot of money already into the wedding but surely if you are unable to afford certain things right now, you need to look at cutting back on a thing here and there?
Also if it is a renewal of your old claim from last year, you might find that you will have an overpayment from July of last year till the last payment, and your new award may only be backdated the three months.0 -

Hi no its not a problem with renewal I did that way back in june, as i do every year ( my eldest son is four so I am used to it) They messed up my childcare, basically thinking he did less hours even though I told them, so my nursery has had to ring up and confirm things...basically a whole heap of mess for them not listening in the first place!
I def wouldnt be complaining if i had messed up by not renewing! I dont know how anyone forgets with all the tv reminders ect!
Thanks for all the advice so far, I will be trying to cut down costs as much as possible. I am going to start ebaying as much stuff as i can that I dont use anymore0 -
Not everyone who claims tax credits is a tax payer.
Not everyone who gets Tax Credits is on a low income.
OP I would try the charity shop idea as you can sometimes pick up wedding type shoe in them. The Littlewoods is a good idea as it is interest free.
Sounds like you have been unlucky with the timing. Hopefully things will get better soon:)0 -
Because my father and his father would not of spent £100 each on a suit..
But your post said that the 3 suits were going to cost nearly £700.
I haven't meant to be argumentative and I know parents nowadays don't pay everything for their children's wedding but I've never heard of the children buying the parents' wedding' clothes before"
Still, hope you work something out.0 -
im not on benefits... I work 16hours a week, I attend full time college doing a health access course, my fiance works 40 hours a week and so i get help from taxcredits to pay nursery fees ect. I live in a private rented house and so the only benefits i recieve are child tax credits and child benefit.
In which case you are clearly utterly demented on spending such a lot of money (that you haven't actually got!) on a single day. It is not the wedding that counts, but the marriage.0
