The papers over here are terrible. Sitting down with a good paper on the weekend and having a good roast in a nice country pub is a pleasure I miss.
Could you get an IPad or something and read the Sunday Times on it?
I don't know if I'd miss pubs or not when there are such fantastic waterfront restaurants at a reasonable price down round the Darling Harbour area. I envy you. Maybe we just want what's furthest away!
Thanks again for the updates Gen!Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

There are many wonderful things about Australia including the food. There's something, for me anyway, about having the papers scattered around a big leather sofa. It's just something I miss, it's not a deal breaker. Overall I'm pretty happy here. I couldn't get a 2/3 bed house on well over 1/4 acre in a nice area, cycling distance from the City for £200/wk in London and the beach is a bit chilly on Christmas day too.
I think the worst is well past now. The long, boring clean-up is yet to begin along with totting up the dead that the news media seem to take such delight in.0 -

Listening to the awful accent of Julia Gillard doesn't count as one.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

She's a ten pound pom though so there's an english accent hidden in there somewhere. I don't like her either. She smiles a smile that's so false I've never seen any other human manage it. It seems to involve different facial muscles to everyone elses. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? This is a jolly useful thread BTW.
I know from experience (living in FL from 97-02) that sometimes the UK media do not always tell the whole story on events such as this, and first hand experience is invaluable.
I can't count the number of times my Mother rang me terrified that we were about to be blown away by a Hurricane, and then the only 2 times we were affected there was virtually no news at all about it in the UK, and she was blissfully unaware.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

Great news, many thanks viva
They intend using public transport and they are 30's so not quite daft kids. Actually, he's a civil engineer and she was a qualified lifeguard so they might even come in useful. The Mary River around Mayborough is dropping at 30cm/hour apparently which is good news. The roads are clearing of water and the first of the food trucks are getting through (under police escort!).
I don't know if you saw this story:

Do not worry if you see articles like this. Ipswich is about 30 miles inland and you are more likely to see me there than a shark. Why would a shark swim 30 miles through pooey water to go to a shopping centre in the middle of nowhere?
Now the snakes on the other hand. They'll be a problem. The best way to stay alive both during and after the floods though remains the same. Don't smoke and look both ways before you cross the road.

Amazing as it may sound, some people actually chose to live in Queensland despite there being a perfectly decent New South Wales just a few hours drive down the road.0 -
Ah, but the F1 circuit is in Victoria
