It's just easier to see what's going on if you're a little more local. Google returns results that are more pertinent for example.
Thank you for saying that though.0 -

lol what do people expect to happen, of course you'll always get a few idiots doing it but all they have to do is delete the images.0 -
Just read through all these millions of webpages (ok slight exaggeration) that you lot keep digging up for me that the Qld govt is delivering food to my uncle's town today (aussie time) tomorrow (our time). I'm guessing they must be landing it on small craft to marinas on coast and bringing it inland.
I have to say, so far I've been really impressed by Qld government's response to this. Even her opponents are saying Anna Bligh is doing an amazing job. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

If he'd found the Old Style Board, he'd have 2 freezers full of meat, 100 jars of home made jam and enough flour to bake bread for the next 24 months, along with tips on cooking over a campfire.vivatifosi wrote: »Just read through all these millions of webpages (ok slight exaggeration) that you lot keep digging up for me that the Qld govt is delivering food to my uncle's town today (aussie time) tomorrow (our time). It's the little things that people forget to stock up on though. In a crisis, you might hit the shops and think: flour, milk, eggs, candles. Nobody thinks: loo roll, deodorant, new pants, personal hygiene products, razors.
If ever there's a disaster local to you and you hear people are being rescued to a community hall, if you turn up with bog roll and razors you'll be God.0 -
Hm, I didn't see this thread yesterday when I stopped by. Interesting. The news seems to say that the flood has reached its peak, I hope so.
There are 2 big floods really. The northern one peaked yesterday, the southern one (Brisbane) will peak today or tomorrow depending on what they do with the dams.
The storm has moved further south so will now be getting into the banana growing area of NSW. The price of bananas will be going up in a few weeks I imagine in Europe, in a few days over here.0 -
Thanks for the info Gen and PN. My daughter and her husband are backpacking and due to arrive in Cairns in 10 days or so then head south along the coast.
Do you think it's stopped raining in Qld now?Murphy was an optimist!!!0 -

I agree. The thing is to have EVERYTHING you need to survive (including drinking water) for about 3 days. By that time somebody will have sorted things out and supplies will be being provided.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

There was no rain in Brisbane's CBD yesterday and the weather forecast says the cyclone is slowly moving south and losing intensity all the time.
Cairns hasn't really been impacted by the storm I think, at least not like the valley towns.
Assuming they're going to take the main roads south, pretty much anyway, things should be clearer by then although the highway has been damaged in places. The area around Gympie especially just to the north has had a lot of damage to infrastructure (Maryborough that we were discussing is inland from there). The highway has been flooded out just north of Gympie for quite a few days and that will have damaged the surface.
Remember this is a huge area that has been flooded, the area flooded and the size of the storm are bigger than Katrina. The places that they will be traveling through once they get past Townsville (eg Mackay, Rockhampton, Gympie) are likely to be quite a mess still.
They might prefer to stay north. If they do decide to head south then the usual rules about driving in Aus apply: take a few days water and some food with you (muesli bars are great). I can highly recommend Tin Can Bay and Airlie Beach as places to stay.0
