Deep breath. It sounds like you're connected to someone else's network which is why you had a gateway of .1.1 and your IP address was .0.1

Obviously without seeing it I can only make a guess that someone thought they were solving the problem by giving you a static (fixed) IP address. All you should have to do at this point is connect to your own wireless connection, enter the WEP/WPA key and you should be back online.

That's where the other threads would have come in handy.

The Virgin Router does not have a WEP key it was installed just before Christmas and has a paraphrase (letters and numbers) key.

Phoned Virgin for WEP key and after nearly and hour and a half being passed around from technical to customer service, was told that I needed to buy a new adapter from them.

I did what you advised in the previous reply - but now the laptop is not even trying to connect. Dead as a doornail.

How on earth did I get to the properties?????? Can I change it back?

start with ipconfig /all

cut to the chase, plug the laptop into the router, and post the ipconfig /all from the laptop

What you desribe as Paraphrase would most likely be WPA/WPA2. Have a look on the underside of the router. Many ISPs will have the default key WEP or WPA printed on the sticker, usually with the serial number.
