Just checked my Wireless Network Connection Window and did a search on available wireless connections.

Quite a few in my area - mine shows that it is security-enabled and has a padlock on it - so I take it it is secure?

Seem to be sinking slowly at the moment in techie stuff.

Hi Closed.

Have -

Virgin Media Netgear Router (wireless enabled) - does not have WEP key but works on a paraphrase password.

Linksys Wireless G Notebook Adapter (Model WPC54GS) that plugs into the card slot on the laptop.

We are on virgin cable.

My basestation PC is connected to the router with ethernet cable (typing from here).

My laptop has Linksys wireless adapter in.

I've not read through the other threads but something else i've just thought of. Have a look in the network proerties again and make sure TCP/IPV4 properties are set to Obtain Automtically for all fields on the first tab (IP address, DNS server). Click on Advanced and make sure there are no entries under Gateway, if there are remove them. Once everything is on automatic OK your way back out.

start, run
cmd

ipconfig /all

copy and paste results

then connect the laptop to the router with a wire, and do the same

So it is saying that your connection is secure but when you are connecting to it, it says that it is unsecure is that right?

It sounds to me like the laptop is trying to connect to somebody elses unsecured wireless connection rather than your secured. I had this with my old xp whilst using a friends unsecure connection whilst she was using it with hers also. It was conflicting IP addresses and kicking us both off every few minutes which is what it sounds like is happening to yours.

I cant for the life of me remember how we solved the problem though

Well, I'm lost. Can't find the properties to try and put it back.

I'm gonna buy a Netgear adapter card for the laptop.

Any advice on what I should be askin Virgin? Or should I trust that they will send me something that will actually work?
