the 'average' person (whatever that is) should be using about 2000 calories a day (although this may be less if extremely sedentary and of a low weight/small stature),

therefore, i also dont understand why, when a diet ends (usually prematurely in my case), i end up putting the weight back on and more. my usual diet is not more than about 2000 calories because when im not trying to lose weight, my weight is stable

however, i have never understood the theory that the first week or so of weight loss is water/fluids, although i often refer to it myself when ive done really well in a first week. why would you lose liquids?

i checked my usual calorie expenditure which is about 2200 (v overweight but sedentary). in order to lose 2lbs a week, i need to cut that by 817 calories a day. therefore im currently trying to stick to 1400 a day give or take. i can obviously eat more if i do some exercise. i started yesterday

actually to answer my own question, i also did some calculations pretending i was my ideal weight (10st) and apparently if i wasnt to do exercise but was just doing my normal desk job, my daily allowance should be about 1700, therefore if someone of that weight is eating around 2000 and not exercising then they will put on weight

i was surprised at how low the amounts were. as i lose weight (fingers crossed), i will have to lower the daily amounts in relation to it

make some soups and liquidise them, stops you feeling hungry for longer and if home made you decide what nutrients go in them

well, here I am on day 3 and 9 shakes later. Not one drop of food has past my lips.

Yes I feel hungry but although there is chocolate in the cupboard, bacon in the fridge etc, nothing can tempt me and the results have been startling

    First the headache has gone

The evenings are tiring a bit

But weight wise I was XX stone 9 Lbs on Monday night
Tuesday I was XX stone 6.5LBS
Weds XX stone 4.5Lbs so I make that 4.5lbs in 3 days.

Looking forward to a dinner on Sunday but still going strong

Money is going further, instead of spending £4 daily on lunch and then raiding tescos reduced counter for dinner, my meals are costing me thanks to SF being half price about 3 quid a day.

See how I get by the end of the week.
  • You can put weight back on quite quickly after a diet due to your metabolism. If you've reduced your intake drastically, then your body reacts by slowing down it's metabolism so that it can get as much nutrition as possible from what you do eat (it's gone in to famine mode). When you go back to eating normally your metabolism will still be slower so you will still be taking more from everything you eat, hence the weight gain. It's best to gradually increase your intake at the end of a diet to get your metabolism back up to speed as you increase your food intake. (wow!!! I actually learned something during my A-levels :o )

The weight loss you have experienced over the last two days is due to dehydration.

A single Slimfast shake contains 35g of sugar. You'd be better off eating two Mars bars a day than having the two Slimfast shakes.

you definetely will lose weight if you stick to slimfast but the bad news is you dont stay on it forever and when you revert back again you put on weight.

    short term fix.

People don't realize how much of their daily water intake is from food rather than liquids. Replacing three meals with three 330mL shakes is a recipe for rapid dehydration, unless you significantly increase the amount of fluids you are drinking.

good point, i remember watching a programme which tested the theory of the 'drink 1.5 litres of water a day'. The bloke was measured before and after the week and during the experiment for a week, he could only get liquid from food.

at the end of the week he felt bad and thought that he was dehydrated but in fact the tests showed that he wasnt, v interesting.

so is that why, if you cut your food intake (not as severely as slimfast) the first week or so is liquid loss? because you are taking less liquid in the form of food? that does make a big assumption that the dieter is not drinking more though and most dieters tend to drink more liquids, if only to ensure that they feel fuller, a contradiction then...
