  • I'd love to know how you managed to get a mortgage for a house that you seemingly struggle to afford even with a lodger too?

Handouts from the Government...if you want that, I'd suggest living in China.
  • Do the Chinese give out lots of handouts to their people? I've never ever heard that before, and it's not the image I had of the Chinese govt either!

I think you will find the UK is the role model of lack-of-personal-responsibility-benefits-culture.

if the op was genuine, then advertise on sparerooms as advised but make it clear the house is being done up so there is inconvenience and dust etc, but until the house is ready, you will only charge half the rent that you would have, plus the normal bills if not included, and then when the house is ready, you put the rent to the normal amount. you will have people biting your arm off for a chance to live cheap for a bit

There is something to be said for the Government not being that helpful towards single adults with no dependants, I think PasturesNew has first hand experience of this as well

  • Hark! is that a waaaahmbulance I can hear?

Quit your whining, you managed to buy your property, which is more than loads of people can manage. No one forced you to into it and due to the nature of buying property, it really is your own responsibility to do the maths before taking the plunge.

I thought stamp duty was waived for first time buyers for properties up to £250k? Does that not qualify as help? I am sure I'll be corrected by someone if this isn't the case.

Recently bought my first home back in August 2010.

From day 0 to now, there has been no help/incentives from the government, which I find hard considering the countries "big push" to get younger people like myself on the proiperty ladder. ])

And? So its no different than it has been for anyone at any time in history buying property.

!!!!!! is it with your generation who think they should get handouts for stuff?

I do agree though that the BTL sector has an unfair advantage; the fact they can offset their mortgage on the property against the tax incurred is wrong imho.

Really? How do you feel about paying for a house that someone else lives in and has more rights than you, the person who owns it has?

And its a business and interest on a loan is a tax deductable business expense whether its for buying a property to let, buying a vehicle, buying equipment...

That's really handy that, I know loads of people whose first home was over £250k =/

Some decent replies and links, a lot of reality checks and far more 'bandwagoners' I can see we're going to get along well :)
