What is it with decent cars that seems to get peoples backs up?
Never quite understood the practice of people, often salesmen (which ok, is off topic re landlords), choosing to drive excessively flash cars - not just mid-range say 3-series BMW, but a 6-series, M Coupe, large Merc, Range Rover etc...
...as though they think turning up at a potential client's address will impress the potential client.
If a salesman turned up trying to get me to buy their product, if they have £50k+ of metal sitting there, I'd assume they are over-charging their customers and decline to do business with them...
Yes, you don't want them turning up in a Reliant Robin, but too far the other way is not about professionalism or success, but greed.Act in haste, repent at leisure.

I guess it depends on what line of business you are in, expectations of clients and so on.
Here, there was one occasion a better car was going to make a difference to see a client.. so we hired a car for that.. and on the day the meeting was called off anyway. Pretty lame but in terms of expense.. not a lot, as for years I've resisted pressure to trade up from my older, reliable, and cheap to run German car for something new and flash to "impress" people with. I don't have anything against those who want new and flash.. provided they are not debt-soaking themselves in to trouble, heading to bankruptcy.A company of my acquaintance tried giving a budget to their salesforce, and it wasn't long before some clever !!!!!! noticed that under certain circumstances a small Mercedes was cheaper to run than a Ford. When the Chairman saw his salespeople in shiny new Mercs, it didn't matter they saved him money. He fell into a carpet-chewing frenzy and the scheme was stopped forthwith.

It depends on whether you consider BTL a legit business.Looking at the number of chancers on here, I would suggest it isnt, its more of a hobby for many. If BTL wants to be treated as a business, it needs a trade body and legal monitoring at every stage.
On "Trade bodies", Google NLA, RLA, Guild of Res LLs etc . You may be interested to know that there are currently around 120 statutes and regulations governing the private rented sector.
Do businesses such as (e.g.) fish and chip shops, carpet retailers, dress shops fail your test too? They don't have an all-encompassing formal trade body nor very specific "legal monitoring at every stage"..........something I dont think bankrupt people with flash cars and penchants for spending all their time away on holiday would appreciate.0 -
It's called jealousy and it's a very ugly part of UK culture.
My car was keyed a couple of weeks ago .... no reason I can work out apart from it was a nice car.0 -
If it makes you feel any better Gwhiz, my previous car was keyed and it couldn't have come under the heading of a "nice" car.........;) I think if someone is minded to inflict that sort of crim damage they just go for whatever is parked up & unattended at the time.
It does not make me feel better..... but I hear you0 -

Years ago I had a 'flashy' car, it had been keyed when on the dealers forecourt and I used to have to park it at remote ends of shops parking areas to avoid it getting dents when neighbouring cars opened their doors into it.
Peoples rants at me, collegues perception of owning a nice car and the general worry of having such a car pee'ed me off so much I now buy older pre dented cars.0 -
I dont think its jelousy that makes people do these things. I think its a general lack of respect for other peoples property that makes it happen.
When I bought my currenty car in Feb 07 (only an 02 plate mondeo so not 'Flash' but was spotless) I went to the local asda the next day (a sunday) the car park was practically empty and I was waiting for the place to open.
A car pulled up into the space next to me and when the guy got out of the car he opened the door straight into my car. Not a tap either. When I got angry with him he said sorry but very bugredingly like he couldnt see what he had done wrong.
Since then Ive had to long black marks down the sides of car like someone has run the rubber handle bar grip of a bike along it. countless other dents in the doors. Two people have 'rubbed' it with their cars in a car park and someone has outright just hit it in the rear wing.
The wife is after a new car when the finance is done on this one....she is gonna have a shock if she is expecting something better than we alreadhy have.
Anyway, on topic for a moment, the country is full of people who think they are owed something for nothing. Governments arent to blame the people are as it has become acceptable for generations of familys not to work because 'they dont have to'.
Rant over.!

Sadly, all very true. Govt does however have to shoulder the blame as it created the "system of opportunity" for the shirkers to get handouts.0 -

True, but we can all keep blaming each other...ultimately we vote in the governments and we had plenty of opportunities to do it when Labour were in and didnt....Now well will have plenty of opportunaties to get to torys out but im sure we wont.
We will just complain about them at a later date instead...At least complaining is something we are becoming good at. haha
It all this Human Rights Law thats the issue.
I appreciate we have to look after each other but we seem to like to look after peolpe to the detriment of all others so either the weakest (which is correct) or the lowest common denominator (which is not right) get every thing handed to them on a plate and the rest of us pay for it.!!
