Ok I'm going to throw one in there and see if anyone else agrees. Denplan - I pay £20 per month (goes up every year) for private dental treatment, I have been doing this for nearly 10 years and every time I go for a check up get a clean bill of health. Big difference before I paid privately and always seemed to need a filling etc :(

I used to do that and now 'self insure'. That is each month I put away £15 a month (what I would have paid in cover) away into my savings account in a 'Dental Pot'. Every time I go for check up I use money from that pot. Also been lucky with my teeth the last few years so there's a couple of hundred in there now ready to pay for any dental work I may have in the future. Worth considering and might be a good option for you too ;)

  • Back in Summer 2000 I jumped on the bandwagon and put £1000 into an ISA investing in Internet co's. Within a few months it was worth almost nothing and although the fund was sold on and since diversified, it is still only worth about £300. I am not an experienced investor, I just fell for all the hype that was about at the time. Stupid!
  • Paying out around £300 for one of those facial exercisers to save paying out for salon visits. By the time I had finally got all the pads on my face in approximately the correct positions I'd wasted so much time and had began to lose the will to live. It is still pristine in its little case 9 years on and I still go to the beauty salon for them to do my facials.
  • I once owned a nice shinney black Discovery with all the toys on it. On my return from a holiday trip, one of the big-ends decided to let go and the engine was written off as a result. I was so in love with this car that I then spent a huge amount of money replaceing the engine with a new one. That wouldn't have been so bad but the car was quite old and realistically, not worth the investment. The lesson I've taken from that time is "Never spend money emotionally" and try to be objective. In some ways the lesson was worth every penny I spent on it - it had to hurt for me to learn the lesson. I suppose when we make expensive mistakes, philosophy is all there is left.
  • I paid over £1000 for laser hair removal whilst at uni (came out of my personal savings) at a Rio beauticians and it did nothing. Then i thought i'd buy a home kit which was next to useless as it got one hair at a time (cost me £300). When the next model came out and promised to get up to 20 hairs at a go rushed out and bought that too, costing me £400. I've used it once, realised i'd been duped again and stored it under my bed. Biggest waste of my life. I've now come to the conclusion that being middle eastern i'll just put up with unwanted hair and spend my money wisely - on shavers :rotfl:
  • Smoking. Literally thousands of pounds up in smoke over 20 years, plus countless prescription charges as I had bronchitis a couple of times a year. I've not had it once since I gave up smoking a few years back.

    QVC. Need I say more?

    What was I thinking? :wall:
  • Recently moved house and splurged on a Superior Radium gas fire. At 2.6 kw, and 100% flueless efficiency, it sounded just right for my big sitting room, as I anticipated it would chuck out heat. And it does - upwards, to heat the wall. So no cosy nights sat in front of it. Now I'll have to buy a mantel of some sort to divert the heat back into the room. Any ideas anybody?

    Alcohol.

Probably spent a good £20,000 to £30,000 on it over the years

Oh god, ciggies as well! Quit that a couple of years ago though :D
  • Jools, are and my lost friend "Pick" sound well matched. 3 pints every night for the last 38 years!
  • paid £6,000 for a timeshare week avout 20 yrs ago, maintenance charge up 15% to nearly £500/an. Would like to sell, but no buyers.
Don't blame them, t/share a total rip-off. If you really want one, buy one second hand for next to nothing. Best not to buy at all.
