Porting numbers question

I've been looking at getting a new phone and have telephoned Vodafone to upgrade from pay as you go to a contracted Iphone. I kind of rushed into upgrading without doing the money saving expert bit. tut tut. Thing is, I've discovered that quidco pay £150 on a new phone contract. When the phone arrives Monday I'm going to return it under the 7 day cooling off period.
Does anyone know if you have to tell them at the time of purchase that you wish to port a number? I'm thinking of porting my current vodafone number to another provider and then porting it back to vodafone. Do I need to do this before I get my phone on order?
It wont really matter if I have to lose my number as I would just carry two phones around for a while until everyone has my new number. Be a good way of getting rid of those unwanted callers and texts offering me money for an accident I had..... dont remember having one, but hey ho.
Many thanks in advance.

Voda are the only network where you MUST give then the pac code when you sign up. They will not accept a pac code after that.
Also, don't hold your breath with Voda and Quidco. The one and only time I used them it took 2 years to pay out. . .0 -
Vodafone are not the only network that do not allow porting in after the contract has started. That is incorrect.
You have a time limit of 30 days to transfer a number and this can be done by calling the Porting Team on 08080 945 945 option 3. They will be able to let you know exactly when the number will be transferred.
However, this may not be possible through Quidco, and it could be new contracts only, but there is no harm giving Vodafone a call as soon as you have the contract to enquire whether it is possible.0 -
I don't think you are correct Ann. What you've said only applies to Pay and Go, as far as I know. http://help.vodafone.co.uk/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=1103&PARTITION_ID=1&CONFIGURATION=1000&CURRENT_CMD=BROWSE_TOPIC
I believe Vodafone are testing in-life porting, but it's still in beta.0 -
I am correct.
Vodafone support in life porting by calling the number in my post, but you have to give the PAC code to Vodafone in the 30 day time limit.
edit. This also applies to porting into a contract, but after the 30 day time limit, the number cannot be changed.0 -
I ordered a 12 month SIM only deal from Vodafone a few days ago. Whilst Iwas trying to sort out a few things I was repeatedly told by their Live Chat people when I mentioned that I was just waiting on my PAC from O2 that I could order the SIM and port the number later. So it must be possible to do.
In the end I received my PAC from O2 and entered it onto the online order. I received a text on my O2 (currently) number to say it would go live tomorrow by 4pm.
Meanwhile I have received the Vodafone sim which despite saying on the despatch note to enter a *hash100hash to find out its number, only says Limted Service. I'm assuming it's because it hasn't been assigned a number and will become active when my number ports over tomorrow.
Anybody know if that's the norm?0 -
Hi Jem,
Your SIM will be working fine as soon as your number transfers over tomorrow.
You can still use your old SIM for making calls and sending texts until the number is transferred. As soon as your old SIM becomes 'inactive', your number will be on the VF network.
A quick turn off and turn on with the VF SIM usually does the trick.0 -

Thanks. I was expecting it to have a temporary number until the trasnfer tomorrow but obviously not.You can still use your old SIM for making calls and sending texts until the number is transferred. As soon as your old SIM becomes 'inactive', your number will be on the VF network.
O2 sim still behaving normally at the moment.A quick turn off and turn on with the VF SIM usually does the trick.
I'll keep that in mind.0 -
I've checked with Vodafone, its definitely a trial service, which is only available to selected customers who were told they could port at a later date. I was also pointed towards https://www.vodafoneinlifeporting.co.uk/web/ which explains the trial nature.0

The porting into an ongoing contract within the time limit has been a 'trial' for at least 6 months.
If the Porting Department are called within the time limit, there would not be a problem transferring a number.
Would a Vodafone rep clarify this please ?0 -
If it helps, I work for Carphone and I can confirm they Vodafone support in-life porting 30 days after point of sale for all our customers. I doubt it would be different for anyone else.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0
