Surely the fuel system going to the inlet needs checking?

Clearly VOSA do not apply common standards to the MOT at all stations, which is hardly fair to the poor old motorist.

I was being generous and thinking you could probably spot leaks in the fuel system from below, but it's a good point.

What do you believe they need access under the bonnet for?

They need access under the bonnet to inspect the brake pipes for leaks for a quick one OTTOMH.

Another one is checking for corrosion within 30cm of a structural component.

Then there's visual inspection of steering rack gaitors if they can't be viewed from underneath.

I dont have my MOT conducted in a garage. Ours are conducted in a special testing centre and from reading on this thread i can assure you that by taking your cars to a garage to have the test done you are actually getting away lightly!

At the testing centre they go over the car with a fine tooth comb!

Not lifting the bonnet during an MOT....send me the name of that garage please.....i will be travelling to there in furure to have one of these "thorough" MOT's conducted:rotfl:
The loopy one has gone :j

We've covered all those, and others.

I think that was the op's original question.

    Another good point there actually.
    Where's the vin plate on a 116?

So recap for colino, (and the op)

    vin plate
master cylinder and underbonnet brake lines for leaks and corrosion
    strut mounts for corrosion
engine temp probe (if it's got a temperature on the sheet)

No need for the engine temp as already mentioned, They can input something on the computer that ignores that.

Not being able to check the oil level for the test would have been my concern. Also can you prove they didnt open the
    bonnet?

Just because you cant doesnt mean they cant.

There are tricks to opening some bonnets. Right selection of wire hooks.

    op's first post
"she then asked how could they do the MOT without opening the bonnet, they replied that they dont need access to do this"

to be fair though, that could have been siad by the receptionist, the tester may well have opened it to actually do the test.

The battery isn't part of the mot anymore.

What do you believe they need access under the bonnet for?

What does the temp probe on the emissions test sheet say?

got it from this site, bonnet catch

    http://www.car-diy.org/what-an-mot-consists-of/

also she never got an emissions temp sheet, just the MOT certificate

As far as I am aware it is only necessary to hand that to the customer in the event of a failure.

Who told you that they don't need to access the engine bay?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
