The battery isn't part of the mot anymore.

What do you believe they need access under the bonnet for?

What does the temp probe on the emissions test sheet say?

Quite happy to be corrected here, but doesnt the battery housing/tray need checked for corrosion?

Thats another thing we get checked during our MOT.

I find it hard to believe that any garage would/would carry out an MOT without lifting the bonnet...

Nice to see that VOSA enforce a common standard across MOT Stations.. :rotfl::D

I don't know where the battery is on a 116, or if you can check from below. You can't check any of our cars, without removing the plastic covers, so they won't fail it as they can't see it even with the bonnet open.

I don't even know what suspension is on the front of the car, if it's struts they should check the top mounts for corrsion, that could be another point to check.

With hindsight, they should have failed it for the bonnet catch probably, to cover themselves.

There isn't a fail here! The only thing that covers the bonnet is if it was insecure and couldn't be latched down (in case it blows upwards and obscures drivers vision). All the rest of the comments while interesting have nothing to do with the actual MOT.

There is a fail if you can't carry out the test.

What part of the test hasn't been completed? The car has been identified, put through a test (which doesn't need the bonnet lifted) and a pass issued. Just because some garages have thrown in a few extras in their "MOT" (presumeably to get more work) there is nothing that a jammed shut bonnet on a 1 series would do to prevent a full test being carried out.

I think that was the op's original question.

    Another good point there actually.
    Where's the vin plate on a 116?

So recap for colino, (and the op)

    vin plate
master cylinder and underbonnet brake lines for leaks and corrosion
    strut mounts for corrosion
engine temp probe (if it's got a temperature on the sheet)

OK, I'll bow out from this one. However those with a mild interest in this might like to know, bonnet not opening is not an MOT failure. The VIN is clearly visible from outside the car and all MOT checks can (and often are) made, quite properly, without the bonnet requiring to be opened.
The idea of a garage, with a "traditional" car, on a ramp not being able to open the bonnet in less than 5 minutes is another matter.
