I had an ASHP installed last July and I am unimpressed with the performance and complexity of the system. The pump is noisy and runs almost continuously when the temperature is around freezing. I doubt that it could handle temperatures of minus 15. I turned the settings down to 10 degrees C recently when I had a one week holiday but the system keeps the water temperature at 30 degrees C to "protect itself" It took one hour for the system to stop trying to heat the house to 21 degrees C. It will use far more electricity than the company estimated but it is probably still cheaper than the oil that I would have used. The RHI will cover almost all of the £7,500 it cost me to install but I still wouldn't recommend an ASHP system to anyone.
Make, model, size, size of house, rads ufh DHW temp etc. Then someone may be able to help you out.

  • The company that installed the system assure me that everything is working as it should and I believe that it is. It just isn't that good a system. Air source heat pump efficiency drops alarmingly when the air temperature is near to freezing therefore the pump needs to run continuously in order to heat the house. They say "but you would use more oil when the temperature drops" which is true but I would get the same amount of heat out of a litre of oil regardless of the temperature. The same can't be said of the heat pump which will generate much less heat per KW when the air is around zero.

You did not answer the question that I asked. We cannot be mindreaders with so little information.

I'm with lovesgshp - give us some more information if you want help rather than just whinging about it.

My ASHP works as I expect it to and is saving me a significant amount on my heating bills, but there again I put some effort into understanding how it works, how to set it up and how to operate it.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • No reason to be so snotty MATELOTDAVE. I wasn't asking for help. I was giving my opinion of air source heat pumps. If you are happy with your system then bully for you but you are still a condescending git.
  • One thing is for sure never install a air to water heat pump if you have mains gas as the unit per gas vs electric is cheaper in the UK. Even though the heat pump will perform more efficiently. Many systems are set up incorrectly and not commisioned properly which causes problems for the user down the line. The people installing them don't understand them. They are designed to be left running 24/7 and temp regulated by 2c at the system off times. You need to learn how the system operates differently to a oil system and this will make more sense then. This should be saving considerably on oil bills if used and setup properly. My mother in law has a Samsung system and it has been a nightmare since install. The installers and company who sold it to her are useless (Yorkshire Eco and My Planet) told her it would save her bills vs her gas boiler and she was pulled in and misold it! She has had bills of £400 a month at times and we are now working worh the distributor of the Samsung to try to tweak and optimise the system. The pumps installed are too small for the job and they have commisioned it twice and still they getting it wrong. You have to be very wary of these companies and I would stay well clear of the above two I mentioned as the company who came out to recomission it said they were snowed under with the same installs up and down the UK!!

Installed and set up properly they will work excellently. Installed bad and it will cost a fortune to operate.

By the way I have no idea of what you mean by took an hour to stop trying to heat to 21c?

Yes your opinion is your opinion & your entitled to it but have you done anything to try to resolve these issues or concerns you have with your system. There's a post been going on here for over 5 years and in that is a lot of content. In that we have helped a lot of people with their systems. Perhaps if you gave a bit more info you would get some help yourself and maybe you will then be happy with your own system. You might be frustrated simply because you don't know how it runs or to run it properly to be most efficient.

  • When I turned the setting down to 10 degrees (house temperature), the air pump continued to run for one hour. It stayed off then until the water temperature in the radiator system dropped below 30 degrees. The company (Husky heat pumps) said that this is normal.

Sorry that you feel the way you do, but there are people on here that possibly could help you optimise the system.
You believe the company that installed it and their thoughts, but there is nothing anyone on here can advise you, as you just want to believe what they say.
This is a forum to help with problems.

  • Do you mean the heat pump outside or the circulation pumps? Circulation pumps usually run for 5-10 mins after the system goes off to remove any build of heat in the outdoor unit but an hour seems excessive? What's their explanation of this, saying it is normal is not enough info and is what the company said to my MIL to fob her off. I'm now involved and they don't like it that I know more than them as I work in Air Conditioning and question everything.
