Cleanse, tone and moisturise - is it a ploy?

Hi, I went into Boots today to try and spend my No7 voucher (they have come out again). I asked the assistant about moisturisers and cleansers and mentioned that I use wipes a lot, she said they recommend you only use wipes now and again for a quick fix and that you should use cleanser, toner and a separate eye make up remover. If this is the case why are the sales of cleansing wipes shooting up all the time? Surely using wipes can't do any harm? Are sales assistants just trying to get us to buy more products?

Yes it's probably all a bit of a ploy, but I could never just use wipes as my face doesn't feel clean afterwards. I also have to really scrub to get eye make-up off with them

I personally hate using wipes and only do so very occasionally. I feel that they leave a 'film' on my skin and I need to wash it afterwards anyway. I just couldn't imagine putting moisturiser on top of the gunk the wipes leave - urgh!!

Anyway, I use a No7 hot cloth cleanser that I get with the vouchers - works out at £3 after that. It feels very luxurious to use, gets rid of absolutely everything and lasts ages. I don't use toner unless I'm having a particularly spotty time, and use a little bit of Cliniques clarifying lotion that I've had forever (although any alcohol based one would do).

I do always moisturise as even though my skin can get quite greasy I find it keeps it in good nick and make up applies better.

Basically what I'm saying is it depends on your skin and what works for it. If the whole shebang is the only thing that keeps it looking good, then go for it. If you can get away with wipes, so be it.

Wipes never really get your skin properly clean, especially after wearing make up. I used to use them through sheer laziness but since I've stopped my skin has been in much better condition! I oil cleanse, or use a cream cleanser and a hot cloth then moisturise at night, then just wipe my face with a hot damp cloth in the morning before moisturising. I haven't had a single zit or flaky patch since starting this in July :D I don't tone. You don't need to with OCM I find.

I use a makeup wipe then use my liz earle cleanse and polish followed by a toner ( I have large pores) and a moisturiser. I dont think its a ploy.
  • I think it really depends on your own skin. It's quite possible that they push the three step routine to get you to buy, but I rarely use toner and I don't notice a huge difference to my skin.

If you are happy with wipes, carry on. If not, maybe try something new. Just don't let a sales person decide for you!

  • Although I do tend to use wipes ...I have a friend the same age who has cleanesd, toned and moisturised every day since she was 12 and she does have lovely skin !!
I think you can put the increase in sales of wipes down to people being in such a hurry these days ( and the young ones who may only have heard of wipes !!) If I had the time...and the money...I would cleanse tone and moisturise !
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

I used to use the wipes because I'm a lazy moo. I had a facial a while ago (just as a treat, it's not a regular thing) and the lady suggested I start to cleanse, tone and moisturise properly again because the wipes don't cleanse properly and can be drying. I assumed she was trying to sell me £££s worth of Darphin, but went away and bought cream cleanser and toner (I have loads of moisturisers anyway, always used that) and started using them. My skin's never been better.

Hi, thanks for your replies. Is there any quicker way of using a cleanser? I just find the cotton wool and cleanse business to be a faff, same with cleansing hot cloths. I do have difficulty in removing my eye make up and I must admit I have to scrub at my eyes with the wipes and I think it would be the same with cleanser. I asked the assistant about a face wash but she said cream cleansers are better for dry skin like mine and that the less water you use the better. I would still have to splash my face at least after using a cream cleanser. When I use wipes I only use them at night but I do wash my face in the morning, can't imagine never using water.

To be honest I can't honestly see how rubbing cream cleanser into your skin and wiping off with a muslin cloth is any harder than using a wipe? :-/

The No7 cleanser I mentioned gets every bit of make up without any rubbing and dragging, and because you use hot water to remove the cream with the cloth, it feels just like a facial every time you use it.

I soak a cotton wool pad with eye-make up remover, hold it on my eye to give it chance to soften the make up, then wipe gently. Slather face with cream cleanser, massage in gently, then wipe off with a muslin cloth. toner onto a cotton wool pad, and wipe over the face. Serum, moisturiser, done. Oh, and eye creams!
