Who pays for what?

  • Generally for me and my OH, all bills are 50/50. I generally pay for everything out of my account with her monthly fixed bill (£200) going straight into my savings account.

Otherwise, we have our own individual bills that come out of our own accounts.

Food wise, we either get £20 each from the cash machine, or I pay for it on my card and she repays me later.

We're planning to get a joint account once we buy our own place in the future! :D
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
  • Very interesting!

I own my flat and the mortgage is in my name. My parents gave me a hefty deposit and although we've Bren together 2 years now when I bought it we'd not been together for long.

Our next place will hopefully be a joint mortgage.

We split the household bills according to our income. I pay the mortgage and my life ins.

Each month at oh's payday I tell him what he needs to give me.

I stick to my budget - all the bills are in my name - he wouldn't have a clue where to start!!

    Really interesting.

I've just moved in with my fiancee and we've jsut openend our first joint account. Its just for bills and food at the moment and we both put in half of the monthly cost. We then keep whatever is left for ourselves.

It will stay like that once we're married but as we have kids etc we've talked about the fact that we'd have to merge all of our money and are both happy to do that.
  • me and dh must be the odd ones out,

we are married but don have a joint account, he works full-time and pays all the bills, the mortgage was recently paid off.

i run my own business so need my own bank account, i pay for all the food shopping and anything we need for the house plus everything for my son (his stepson) but his always pays half for anything ds needs like school trips, uniform ect

dh monthly wages is £1600 mine is £800

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I'm 39 and we have been married for 19 years. Allof that time we have had one joint account where both our salaries go in, and all household bills are paid out from. We have paid off our mortgage, and we have an ISA each (would have them in joint names if we could!)
Over the years, I have earned more than him, and now he more than me (I took a real drop in money to become a vicar) - but we promised to each other 'all that I have I share with you', and that's the way we operate!

If he gets £200 a month to spend for himself, how much do you get to spend for yourself. It seems your 'spends' are going on family things. seems a bit unfair.

It probably isn't fair but it bothered him not having his own money and it doesn't bother me. TBH if I wanted something I could easily spend less on the kids but I'd rather take them to the zoo than get my haircut.
  • I buy the food etc and pay for the big things eg holidays, new kitchen, bathroom.
DH pays the regular household bills. Mortgage already paid off.
I am retired, have two pensions and have savings, he is still working. Children all grown up and independent.
I am good at saving, he is good at spending. Not a week goes by without something arriving through the post: books, gadgets, things for hobbies.
We have separate bank accounts, though I have finally succeeded in persuading DH to set up a joint account for gas/electric bills so that if he dies first I don't get problems, LOL.

Me and the OH have been together 2 yrs and living together for 4 months.

We pay 50/50 equal split on everything, rent / bills / food.

I am a student and earn about £6500 a year :( and he earns around £30,000 with all his overtime.

So it's hard for me as it's most of my income, and only about 1/4 to 1/3 of his income.

He will pay for meals out, and anything else that we do, and helps me with fuel for my car..

It's hard but it's best in the long run, avoids arguments!

    Yes, I would say so.

Unfortunately the OH has a big gob on him in arguments and tends to try and bring up who has bought what etc etc.. So, for me, even though it's hard because it's most of my money, it's better as no-one is paying for me in any way.

It is hard when he is buying new things all the time and I'm not :(

Although when I graduate I should overtake his earnings within a year or two, then I'll be laughing
