Both our salaries go into a joint account, all expenses come out of the joint account. Simples!

We took our take home pay (thus accounting for student loan payments, GAYE etc), took off our travel commitments (£409 for me and £125 for him), then worked out what each of us had left and pro-rata'd out what we'd pay into our bills account. We've got a joint account and our own accounts but when we marry (if this is what the future holds) we will no doubt just pool it - that would be so much easier! Interestingly he earns less than me but because of the travel costs we end up paying similar amounts into the joint account and savings. If we pro-rata'd just on take home pay I could afford to live with him.

I pay for everything, OH looks after kid and house all day.
Before this I paid for everything to do with house (in my name only) and OH paid for all groceries and most of going out, based on amount we both earned.

If you have JUST a joint account, how do you buy each other presents and surprises? My Oh and I are looking into a joint account and this is one thing that I don't think will work. I check my accounts all the time and so i would notice what he was spending and where at, for instance I got him a trip to Rome for Xmas and so Jet2 would show up as would the name of the hotel. Any ideads how to overcome this?

we have done various things in our time together.

first living together I paid for everything and he gave him his half of the rent

then we got a joint account and both paid in £650 each which covered all household bills and whatever of our own wages we had left was ours.

then we had kids, OH wage goes into the joint account and pays the bills I had the child benefit etc in my account to pay for extras. This didn't work as I was forever hassling OH for the odd £10 he took out because soemtimes it left the account short for bills he had no idea were due, so now his wage goes into the joint account and immediately £200 is tranferred to his personnal account for the month and that is his spends. I still get my p/t wage, child benefit and tax credits but I pay for any holidays, days out all the kids clothes etc so he normally has more left at the end of the month than me. This has worked really well as I no longer hassle OH and he can get me presents without me finding out too.

If he gets £200 a month to spend for himself, how much do you get to spend for yourself. It seems your 'spends' are going on family things. seems a bit unfair.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
