Asked to pay P&P on collection item as price was too low...

I'd be tempted to ask him to post it then, considering he will have to pay for the postage, which would eat into his 'profit'.;)

To be honest I would always check if collections are ok before bidding, but in this case you say you didnt realise he was so close until after you had won the item. Therefore you expected to pay for it to be posted when you bid, and were quite happy to pay the total price.

I understand that it does make sense to collect though if possible, now you are aware of how close he is, especially as he lives so close. But Its about asking, not expecting. Would a compromise be a good suggestion, perhaps collect and pay half the p&p?

He shouldnt really be inflating his p&p to make more money, it is fee avoidence. His argument is not really valid, if his p&p was fair, most of it (apart from the packaging costs) would be going to the PO anyway!

Why leave no stars as this will not do anything to the sellers postage DSR as only a 1 or 2 star rating has any effect on a sellers DSRs no stars is the same as no leaving a rating at all and so it does not count.
As you did not ask to collect before the auction had ended all you can really do is accept the offer of having the item posted then leave 1 star for the post and packing DSR for overcharging you on the postage.
Enough of these 1 star ratings and the seller will very soon be kicked off ebay and as you say the seller uses postage to make money this will not take very long.

and don't even reply with that cr4p about it being against ebay rules to charge extra on postage your only using that as a way to justify marking him down because your p1ssed off he wouldn't let you collect.

We only have the buyer's side of the original story so don't know the full reasons the seller gave/could give. The seller may charge £4.99 P&P on all his sales and may have recently made some sales where he paid around £8 to post the item so he may have been hoping to recoup that loss on this sale. If someone sells a lot of different items I can see it being a pain to individually weigh and price up all items.

If the OPs seller has admited to making money on postage to avoid ebays fees then the OPs seller is as good as saying he does not mind ripping ebay off.
A seller like this if given half a chance will also not mind ripping off the odd buyer or two.
Sellers like this are no good for ebays reputation as a safe place to buy and sell and any business seller with any sense can see this.
If a buyer is ripped off by a seller on ebay they do not name the seller in most cases they will just tell everyone they know and who will listen to them that they were ripped off on ebay.
This means less buyers and less profit for honest ebay sellers and anyone with a business on ebay will not like the sound of that.
Ebay does not need sellers like this so I go with my original advise of having the item posted then leave 1 star for the post and packing DSR for overcharging you on the postage and maybe even some neutral feedback as well.

Why it is up to you to tell somebody on a public forum how they may reply?

With the attitude you display no wonder buyer protection is needed!

The eBay Star question is "How reasonable were the P&P charges?". if they are charging £4.99 p&p for an item that costs say £1 to post then the buyer is quite entitled to leave one star regardless of any other consideration!

There is also another big problem on ebay at the moment with private sellers running dubious businesses on ebay which is also very harmful to ebays image and most of them like this seller items http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/160528202309 use postage to avoid fees.
This seller is making lots of these items and selling them so should be a business seller but they are using a private account with low start priced auctions and high postage to make their money.
Listings like this make ebay look bad and result in a loss of business to honest ebay sellers.
This is why I advise anybody who is overcharged on their postage to leave low DSRs for the seller.

Well surly they should shop around to get the best deal. If it's a £4.95 P&P charge when it should be around £2.50 then either buy two items or more from them or look elsewhere.

In this case i would pay up and wait for the post, if postage is excessive i would mark the DSRS accordingly.

As for collections, I have had a few items collected with no problems, all have paid cash to which is better with no paypal fees, with that my postage fees are usually correct so no profit to be made.

On guy asked if he could check it was working before he went which is fair enough (Nintendo 64), to which we had a game on goldeneye and a chat about geeky gaming stuff. He left a happy man and I had one less item and some money.
