Blame QE and inflation and stand by for more of the same...
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Jackie I have been thinking about this for a while. There are just 2 of us and supermarkets cater mostly for bigger families.Whilst I agree bigger packs can be split up etc, it does make keeping within a weekly budget more awkward. Fine to stock up on the Branston beans at 4 for £1 in any one week but when it comes to say chicken breasts or coffee, it is more difficult to stay within a weekly spending limit if you start buying these in bulk and storing. Now I know its a good feeling to have a freezer and cupboard stuffed to the limit but surely we are paying to store stuff we never get round to using. If we really want to go back to old style living like our mums did we should be shopping and buying just enough for meals that day/week from whats the best on offer at the time. Certainly my mum didn't have much in her storecupboard except the basics like flour, sugar and the odd tin of peas but we never went hungry even if we filled up on a slice of bread and jam occasionally. When my kids were young I only ever shopped once a week and we just eked the food out to last until the next shopping day. Although I did have a fairly well stocked cupboard I didn't start buying fresh stuff in bulk until I had my first freezer in the early 70's. It was from then buying bargains became almost an obsession. There is another thread on here somewhere about the high cost of shopping for one and I do have some sympathy to the OP of that thread but thats the way the big 4 make their money. Getting us to buy things we don't really need by making the offers look so tempting. We moved to a small town with a Co-op as the largest store within 7/8 miles and use it quite regularly. I haven't noticed that I am spending any more because I am only buying smaller packs of what I need. We also have a butchers where 1 chicken breast is as big as 2 from any of the big SM's, a fishmonger and a bargain store for cleaning stuff etc. I now go to the SM less and less.
Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot.

but then the supermarkets are businesses and they are there to make money, maybe theres costs somewhere along the line that couldnt be avoided and they have been passed onto to tesco

I agree to a degree as the cost of fuel is spiralling but its the way that they do it. Rather than put a few pennies on each item they are hitting some items hard which in turn hurts the customers pocket hard as well. In some instances the increase is around 30% which is a lot to put on a product. After noticing a few of the rises I declined buying the product because of the percentage of the increase.
I really do feel for the haulage co's at the moment as I suspect that they are not receiving the full increase that we are paying.

Sorry cannot multi quote but a member of staff at Tesco also told me that the promotions are dictated by the manufacturer. This is when I buy the kids drinks, cakes etc for school because it saves me a fortune :)
    Comping from May 2012 :D

Thank you to all that post & contribute, I think you are wonderful, I could not achieve without your help :)
  • I have been told by a friend who works in the marketing dept of their employer that Tesco do dictate the deals and a nitemare to work with. They have total control of what the prices, deals and package sizes.
    Tesco is expensive. Very expensive.

That's odd I'm finding my weekly shopping bill is going down,...
I'm not sure mine is going down, but any rise is barely noticeable.

My DD told me today that the OJ which has been 57p per litre has gone up to 64 this week and lots of things have gone up not only by the od one or two pennies but by 5 & 10 p at a time .I am glad I am staying out of the big stores this month and only 'shopping 'from my cupboards and fridge/freezer.

P.S. The big Tesco's are getting their easter eggs on display this week as well.greedy beggers

This happened weeks ago as Lidl's went up at a similar time.....If your store hasn't changed it till now you were lucky....;)

As for Asda we shopped there for ages their fruit and veg wasn't great and we started to do an online comparison using mysupermarket...We keep finding that tesco are coming out cheapest but maybe that's because there is two of us and the offers on at the time suit us....

We've just got a hotel break out of Tesco though and as the shopping is coming out cheaper it's more than Asda are offering us...In my mind all things have been going up for a while not just with the VAT increase, there was the bread increases of last year due to the wheat problem so all things have an impact....Morrisons have the better meat but they are always more expensive for us..
  • My DD works in a supermarket (not Mr t`s) and after a one week holiday returned this week to find most prices on her dept had risen by upto 10%.

Last week I bought corned beef at Tesco - this time last year was 79p, went up to 97p, increased to £1.05 which is what I paid last week, this week it its £1.35 a total increase of over 30% in one week - absolutely ridiculous - 5-7p was whay I would expect but 30% in one week is not on. No more shopping there if I can help it - already use butcher, baker, farm shop, fish shop - at least if they are more expensive it wont be Tesco getting my hard earned cash and will keep someone local in a job. Have a few recipts lying about from over the past 12 months will have a right look at this!
