Car licencing, tax and MOT -advice needed
Hi there im new here, and appreciate any advice given...............
Basically I just bought a car and was driving my car today and realised its untaxed! silly me thought it was taxed till the end of Jan when infact it expired end of Dec
So anyway it is the MOT which is running out the end of the month *sigh*
So I called the DVLA today and they said, I can still drive with the old tax disc until midnight 10th Jan because of the bank holidays........
Ive got the address of my local DVLA office from the very helpful man on the phone, so im going to go on monday morning to tax and licence the car.
However, will they have a problem taxing my car as the MOT is going to expire end of month??
I cant afford a new MOT before then.............
Thanks

You're fine.
If you purchase a tax disc the car must have a current MOT on that day of purchase or if bought in advance, the 1st day that the tax disc is valid from. No more no less.

As long as you have a current MOT you will be able to tax it.
Why cant you go to the Post Office in the morning and tax it.
Dont care what the DVLA actually say, if a copper stops you, they can penalise you. All police cars have
number plate recognition devices now, so you could be stopped at any time.
If you have the time, date and the name of the DVLA person it may help in your defence, keep a note of it.
I wouldnt go anywhere in it to be honest, till its taxed.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
^ Thanks guys, To be honest I have to go to DVLA to licence it aswell, if I send application through post it will take 4-6 weeks.
The person I spoke to said I can tax and reg. the car at the same time, I will get the tax disc asap, and they will send me the new V5C cert. at a later date.....................
It is a risk, but what else can I do?
I wish I realised earlier today as I was off work. Unfortunately on the phone all day to the damn council!0 -

The car will still be listed as license due to expire.
The OP can check this himself by using the Vehicle Enquiry website. http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/application?origin=vnav_bar.jsp&event=bea.portal.framework.internal.refresh&pageid=Vehicle+Enquiry
I thought it remained this way for at least 10 days as I've left it that long in the past, yet my friend last month had no tax until xmas eve and it was still listed as Due to Expire.0 -
That's not what they told me!
If you have applied for a tax disc, you can usually drive for up to 5 days into the month without the disc on display, to allow for the post. This month it has been extended.
If you haven't applied, you cannot drive.

He may be ok.
The DVLA are not enforcing expired rent due to the snow and delay in the Christmas post.0 -
The licence has already expired, the OP said it expired on 31.12.10The car will still be listed as license due to expire.

You can only have grace time if you have already applied for the licence,
Like the other poster says, take the bus, it really isnt worth the risk.
Is it insured?make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

The system does not update on the 1st of the following month.
The system will still show the OPs car with an expiry date of 31/12 with a status of Due to Expire.
I've did for years due to a clash with my insurance and my friend proved it last month driving into Central London and parking on the road for 3 weeks!0 -
Hi there, I'm a she by the way LOL
Thanks for all the input................Ive just checked on freecarcheck.org and it does say "licence due to expire" but this will probably change as the adviser said, at midnight 10th Jan?
I could go by bus but I cant leave my car at my house as its on a public road and the ticket inspectors in my area are on point!
It is insured by the way, and still has MOT till end of this month.........0
