Another vote for the Orange San Francisco as a cheap alternative. Also you can get all the Orange stuff wiped with a bit of effort. See this thread for links:

i have owned both and now have the galaxy s, guys who dont like samsungs touchwiz ui can customise it and use launcher pro etc like i am, makes the phone much nicer. Also samsungs bigger screen and super amoled screen makes watching films better. the gaalaxy s has higer internal strage 8gb compared. to 4gb using a sd card for the deisre. One thing i did like for the deisre was the big clock in the middle, strange that evryone im downloadin from the android market is using up battery. I have also found samsung cs better than htc. They replaced my battery when i thought it was faulty, and also gave me £25 to buy headphones when my headphones broke very quickly. Htc on the otherhand take foever for a repair, to sort out my overheating desire, thankfully i changed it for a sgs0

i had same dilemna ht desire hd or samsung galaxy s
Went for samsung galaxy s. Not dissapointed, 1 month in no hardware faults installed loads of apps from android marketplace and flashed firware to 2.2 froyo version.. waiting for gingerbread 2.3
Another suggestion maybe the google nexus very simlar to samsung galaxy s but with 8 gb more internal memory BUT no way to install external SD card... so swings and roundabouts (it also has super AMOLED display).0 -
I've had my Desire for almost a year now and it's behaved perfectly, despite heavy use. A colleague bought one for his wife a month later than I did and it's been just as reliable. If I was buying a new phone tomorrow, I'd be deciding between another Desire or the San Francisco. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.

I bought the Desire and would recommend it. I've had no problems with it so far.
I didn't go for the Desire HD because I felt it was too big for my daily life and would be about an extra £5 a month for which I couldn't see the benefit. I suspect there's similar issues with your choice but at least you get to choose between two highly recommend phones not that that seems like a plus when you're choosing between them.0
