Just looked at this on linksys site here:http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1148435315453&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

(don't know if that link will work)

Any way they claim it to be 54mbps (hence the model no wrt54gs) with speed boost to give it "up to 35% faster". That doesn't make 128mbps.

The good news is you wont notice for surfing the net, only when sharing files on your network. Anyone know any different?

Thanks, I picked one up today. First I went to Currys.Digital but they wouldn't price match it so I went across the road to PC World where they had loads stacked up by the entrance.

Ordered online through collect at store & got my Quidco cashback :)

For my dad I got the WAG54G with matching PCMCIA card from Staples for £39.99 - just about to put the PCMCIA card on ebay so should get about a tenner back. This works for ADSL folk.

DOH! Well, i have just bought a WAG354G + PCMCIA card in one box labelled "wireless G ADSL gateway Kit for Notebooks" from PC world for £49.99

the WAG354G is a bit better looking as it is smaller and white/chrome - it goes in the hall so the missus will be happier :)

For those wondering "what's the catch" there isn't one - it's even been advertised on TV.

    :) Wish I had cable...........

I also have the deal mentioned here for my own cable connection. I bought it from PC World at £49.99 a few months ago - this is a very good deal.

I am considering flashing my firmware to an alternative - but be warned this is not for most people - only for techy geeks. And this version of the model (v5.1 onwards) are not as good for flashing with alternative firmware.

If you haven't a Staples nearby you can get the WAG54G router/PCMCIA card from MISCO for £40.87 delivered....

5% cashback through Quidco too (courtesy of HotDealsUK). Very speedy despatch too.
  • Thanks. This is just the sort of deal I have been looking for in the past weeks. I saw in staples today they had just the USB thing for £40!!!

As a bonus the nice checkout staff charged me £35.99 - applied a discount without even asking!!??

Thumbs up to PC World (today only!)
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

I bought one of these kits in Feb when they were £49.99. Really good, easy to set up units. Runs at 54mps - you will not find this slower than a 125/mimo for surfing unless you have an internet connection that is faster than 54mps.
You may find it a little clunky if you want to stream video - but probably not.
It runs 11b and g, has WEP and WPA, MAC filtering and has a very easy to use browser interface.
I would recommend it - I previously tried a Belkin router and it was very 'twitchy' and needed to be rebooted constantly.
The USB adapter is ok, but it's large (pack of fags size) and ugly. Only needed if connecting a device doesn't have built in wireless. Will run at 54mps (i.e. no speedboost) if only have usb 1.1 not 2.0.

    Hi Chuffy

I bought the same model a few months ago as well. I have manged to WEP encrypt it but I believe WPA is better but dont know how to set that. Have you done yours with WPA?

I'm using WEP as I'm using a Netgear MP101 media player which will only run on WEP not WPA. You can change it easily though - go into the setup (type 192.168.1.1 into your browser and enter your password)n.
Choose the wireless tab, then wireless security. Then in the dropdown box, choose WPA and enter the passkey/phrase you want.
You then have to change each wireless device to the same settings.
    HTH.
