i think billy bragg is great. i hope he enjoys his home and whatever saddo wrote the letters somehow finds their way out of bitterness and bile.
i'm celebrating my love for you with a pint of beer and a new tattoo / and if you haven't noticed yet i'm more impressionable when my cement is wet. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
Another who likes the idea of socialism, just does not practice it.
Is it Opt-out socialism, believe it is right for all "but you can all f-off I am loaded now"
Wait a minute, so someone who has a few quid is not allowed to feel empathy for the less well off members of society?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

Read the rest of the thread before before you jump to hard.I am sure he is, it is not a reflection of the person really. I am sure he agrees with socialism, I am a capitalist so think fair play.
In reallity it will only be socialists who have a problem with him having a big house paid for by money he has earned.
I have no problem with him doing what he wants with his own money and holding beliefs.
That is why on the item you have quoted has smilies on the end of each sentence (they were jokes).0 -
From the article:
Bill McKay, a man who has not worked in 11 years because of Thatcher, stressed that he would have been willing to accept a very small percentage of the money Mr Bragg spent on his sprawling seaside mansion.
I think it's shameful of Mrs Thatcher to hire henchman that physically stopped this man from working for 11 years.

A New England (covered by Kirsty McColl) is pretty well known. He's a good songwriter and plays a mean guitar (very influenced by Martin Carthy), and someone who's heart is very much in the right place. He deserves what he's earned.
I'd imagine that A New England pay a pretty decent annual royalty year after year.
He has written some beatiful songs.
Listen to "Levi Stubbs Tears" - truly great lyrics.0 -
It's not that big anyway.
This is a big house.

You've got to admit that it does seem a bit "Animal Farm" like.
IMHO, one of the reasons socialism is a flawed ideal. In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -
Billy Bragg split the proceeds of selling his first company between his employees (including Phil Jupitus who was on the payroll then.) He's not above anyone being rewarded for hard work as long as 'everyone gets a tickle'. Could anyone else on this thread say they'd do the same?
For the record his wife is an interior designer which probably has a lot to do with how smart the house looks plus they have a couple of kids and dog(s?) so not such an excessive size really all things considered.
