My father has been set up to use gmail, and other google things on a netbook for a year now. He's sent and responded to mails on it from all the family.I can type reasonably well on the iPad.
Kabayiri: You can jailbreak the iPad to get more flexibility.

So why, recently, did he say to me.... "but I don't have an email account" !!??? :rotfl:
I don't think he's ready for hacking his iPad just yet
Mind, he doesn't have to use it. He has just become a 'cool and trendy grandad' as far as the kids are concerned.0 -
Not quite sure your 1 friend is representative of the millions who have bought an Ipad, particularly when you consider that the Ipad probably has the highest customer satisfaction rating of any gadget released in the last few years.
I'm pretty sure your friend didn't buy a keyboard to protect his Ipad. He probably bought a case.
Look at all the threads on here from people who bought netbooks / cheap laptops. The machines all suck and people hate them.
I'm guessing you have one. Glad to hear it meets your needs.
Yes, he bought a case, and a keyboard and an ipad. Now he has a clumsy, costly, limited cheap lappy, in effect. And as I said, we all know Apple are great at hyperbole ("magical and revolutionary" - if that isn't smoke and marketing bullstuff, what is?), and he bought it. An iPad wasn't what he needed, he bought it because it was so heavily promoted that he thought he was missing out on something. Hence my suggestion to try really using a tablet device such as an ipad before spanking hundreds of quids on it.
"The [non-ipad-but-considerably-cheaper] machines all suck and people hate them" - what, *all* of them? If only they had all bought ipads instead then the world would be a beautiful place. Maybe they really are "magical" after all, and not just big phones well marketed.0 -
Messed around with an old ipod -not ipad- the other day and can't believe people buy such hobbled devices voluntarily.
Why is it general wisdom that one has to break warranty terms on ipad to make it work better ?0 -
A friend has one of those cheap (£130) Android 7' tablets and it is horribly, horribly slow processing apps.Dry January: 31/31 days. :T0

Android Honeycomb will have better tablet support, not sure when it's released though. Anyone know?.....0

All about the technology fair and tablets
PS in edit - the RIM Blackberry tablet looks really interesting

After seeing what is available at CES, it's most definately not the time to be investing in a tablet at the moment. Android 3 on the Motorola Xoom looks to be shaping up to be a class leading device.
You would probably be better off picking up a second hand netbook from somewhere to tide you over until the new devices start coming out.0 -
Op, why do you particularly need a tablet? I would recommend a netbook, you can pick up a new (refurbished) one from Argos on ebay (if you time it right) for not much over £100... IMHO would be a much better choice than a current cheap tablet.A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A
If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.0 -

You missed the point.
If you're trying to argue that people with netbooks are happier than people with Ipads, then you're way off the mark. And the facts bear that out.
I've used many netbooks, and after about a month they start to wear you down. They're slow and clunky, menus / task bars take up half the screen. Only good thing about netbooks is the price.
I wonder how many netbooks were sold due to marketing bull
You never bought an Ipad, doesn't mean you're more intelligent than those who did. And doesn't mean those who did fell for the hype.
Maybe if Apple was poor at marketing the Ipad would be more acceptable. Strange world, innit.Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0
