In one of my local tescos all the books are stickered with a higher price than the SEL. Don't know if they scan at the lower price as the scanner wasn't working. If they scan at the higher sticker price and not the lower SEL price how do you argue you have been overcharged as the price is blatantly displayed on the book. Most of them are stickered at .97 and the SEL is .96 decided not to give it a go at the mo as all the managers were having a morning meeting and thought it would be a bit too obvious!!!

This is quite a confusing situation, as I have picked up many books of late, some with success some without. For example, Jamie Oliver has a 12.96 sticker, and a 12.97 sel, you would think clear r&r, but no goes through till at 12.96. Also true for Steven Gerrard Autobiography, and red book for boys. What I would suggest is look through the rack, as frequently the offers over a few weeks maybe different, and sometimes you get stickers of older offers further back. If you can find them with 2 or 3 different prices as Horrid Henry books have been of late then always pick the lowest.

I also check the shelves where they have taken away the SEL, as I am now aware that there is aready a fault there. If you find different stickers in this instance take a gamble on the lowest. When going through tills check the prices, if not in your favour ask them to delete from bill. There won't be any question against your decision as the price on the screen will match the price on the book.

You just have to work a bit harder for these r&r's, but there are plenty there.
As my sig, seems to be offending some. I have removed it, god bless you mr T.

Thought i had the PC game (messiah?) that was on the poster. SEL £27.97 poster price £24.9x. Thought wont risk the price checker as loads of people on here are getting caught by using that. It only went through the till at £24.9x. made a little excuse and got it refunded at the till.

All 24 and MI3 dvds were correct

With the mi3 dvd's don't worry if they have changed the SEL, they also had round stickers on the shelves at the end of the runs, these show the 9.74 price, some of these have not been removed. Happy hunting.

    BOGOF

    Just out of interest

Do you think you can by a Bogof and then return one for refund, thus keeping one for free?

Thanks largley to tips on here I have been plodding on with a steady stream of RnRs for a few months now. I started off with meat where the pack/kilo price was different to the SEL/kilo price - and I soon caught on the the fact that, to get an RnR, the Pack price needs to be HIGHER than the SEL price . I'm clear how that works.

I then slowly branched out into items like coffee and washing powder where, for various reasons, the price per item which the computer registers from scanning the items barcode is HIGHER than the price shown on the SEL next to (or sometimes a fair distance away from!!!) the actual item. Round about the same time I started on the multibuys/bogofs where the computer doesn't pick up the offer and the discount doesn't come off. These types are hard to spot unless there is a tip off from somebody who's had one accidentally.I'm also OK with that type of RnR.

Recently I've been looking very closely at yellow SELS especially those where the date has expired. These seem to be fairly clearcut but not always successful as the offers are sometimes extended without the label being changed or - even worse- there's a new offer which is even cheaper (got caught out with cheese biscuit tins recently!). These seem to be a bit riskier , especially if there's no scanner handy, but worth a try everytime.

Now, I need some advice please on things like books and cd's, games or dvd's. Am I correct in thinking that MOST TIMES the computer will have been programmed to correspond to the price on the SEL and that I need to be looking for items that have an individual price sticker on the item which is less than the SEL price ? I've had several successes where items are clearly priced lower than the SEl, the item has gone through the checkout at the higher SEL price and CS have given an immediate refund without even checking whats on the shelf. These seem to be the most clearcut RnRs of the lot with absolutely no room for even the most difficult CS person to argue. I'm a bit confused because I have noticed several posts on here where people have tried for games or books that have individual price stickers higher than the SEL and been surprised that the item has scanned at the lower SEL price. I just want to make sure I've got things the right way round ! I realise that there are other possible RnR scenarios but these few types suit me well as a relative newcomer to this game ! Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Well done tbw, you are clearly in this for the long run. I find that this is always the best way to approach things, see one that works, and you then see loads in that particular section that are also incorrect. Branching out slowly into other sections you gain experience along the way. As I have commented before the problem with books is that sometimes they are mispriced incorrect in what seems to be your favour, to repeat the example a book stickered £12.96 sel £12.97. A clear r&r or so you would think, in some of these instances they have sent out SEL's that are incorrect, they get amended, by computer but they don't bother to change the SEL's in store. If you buy it it goes through 1p cheaper than the SEL. This I see a lot, if there is a misprice that will not do them any harm they don't change it, if it does they remove it immediately.

Ref Tesco removing all price indications,(SELs, stickers, posters etc), leaving the customer no idea of what they are paying for the goods.
The phrase "ask at customer services" is apparently not satisfactory. Trading Standards have been made aware of this practice, and it breaches the price marking regulations.
These state ' there is no specific requirement to price mark all goods individually. The price can be shown in any one of the following ways,
    On the goods themselves
On a ticket or notice displayed close to the goods
On a price list displayed close to the goods to which it refers'
'Customers should be able to see how much goods are going to cost. Traders must therefore give a written indication of the price of goods'.

It is an offence not to provide written prices, so how does Tesco get away with it?

EDIT If Mr T is made to put prices back on the cd's dvd's & games that currently have no prices shown anywhere ( to guarantee no R&R?), there is a good chance that those of us whose local stores do that will now have a chance to pick up some mispriced goodies!:j
  • I was in my fairly local tesco's on Saturday but found no r&r's even the chicken fillets (skin on) had yellow stickers over the orginal label plus it doesn't have any scanners to check prices and most of the SEL's aren't even on the shelves let alone sticker prices on the products, they must be getting on the ball and getting around it this way.

No but if you wanted to, you could buy the last one on the shelf when there's a BOGOF offer, go to CS for a raincheck voucher (to get the BOGOF next time) then use the raincheck voucher at the till while the offer is still on (you will get both free that time). Not supposed to, but I always have.

Then, if you were really sad, you could return the original item with the original receipt, hence you would then be the proud owner of 2 free items. I haven't done this BTW, I have been quite happy with 3 for the price of 1, and no visit to CS.

Drawback: it would raise your profile at CS for the sake of 2 packets of cakes (or whatever). And you would have to be lucky in the first instance to find the last one on the shelf (or be able to convince the CS it was the last one without her checking).
