Kick in the stomach

My hubby is having no luck job hunting. He left the army with a job to go to but at the last minute they pulled it from him and gave it to someone else.

No agencies have anything on and every job he applies to either do not reply or interview him and then don't contact him.

It is just one kick in the stomach after another. I have no idea what to do. The army have refused to withdraw his resignation and they advise that they will not accept people rejoining. Even our back up plan has blown up in our face.

Just have visions of literally having nothing in the next 3 months.

There really is no point to this post, I am sorry. I just don't know what to do anymore. :(

  • Hang in there... I can imagine this is completely daunting and it's really sad you have been let down so badly, but there will be other options. Who knows? Maybe this is a whole new beginning!

This is what we were so hoping. A job he had an interview for just before Christmas has been readvertised online, the same day he had the interview. It was his perfect job and he is gutted.

I just wish there was something I could do to help him :(

Thanks Stassy. Comforting to know its not just us but at the same time shocking it is happening to anyone. Hope your partner gets somewhere soon too.

So sorry to hear how difficult things are for you at the moment but as someone has already said, sometimes what seems a terrible blow can be a chance for a new beginning. A few yrs ago, my husband's academic contract ended unexpectedly. He was devastated and convinced he'd never get another position, but it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to him. He decided to change career - went for loads of interviews without getting anything but then got down to the last two for one. The other person got the job but then turned it down. They were still doubtful about taking him without any relevant experience but he offered to do the job for free to prove himself. They took him on for a six-month contract because they were impressed with his initiative and he's never looked back. Now has a far better-paid job and is much happier than before. I remember how hard it was for him going for interviews and not hearing back but tell your husband not to give up and to maybe think a bit wider than the type of job he had in mind.

All the best and I hope 2011 brings you good things.

According to media there’s mostly an acute shortage of jobs in UK so perhaps reassure him that this is a quite common experience that a lot of people are having at the moment and that this is more to do with the failure of the country and the world economy and not so much to do with him. Four years ago before the crash he might probably have had little or no trouble getting a job but unfortunately it’s now all just a barren wasteland for nearly everyone.

So some practical things to consider doing now are perhaps to now sign on and get all the benefits you’re entitled to so at least that’s better than nothing coming in.

And keep on applying for jobs but also, in the meantime, perhaps it might be worth trying to start your own business. There are thousands of things you can do. A fairly straightforward way to get started is to do some buying and selling and if you try out 10 or 20 things then most people find one or two goers. If not then keep looking till you find a good opportunity.

Once you’ve got a good one then it’s just hard work churning out more of the same. Successful buying and selling is often 10 and a 100 times more lucrative than ordinary jobs so if you pull it off then in just 6 or 12 months time, or even sooner in some peoples’ cases, you could be laughing all the way to the bank. Plus you’re more a master of your own destiny and less subject to a lot of the negative aspects of working for other people.

So get 20 items of tat, stuff lying around your house, stuff that family and friends have lying around and keep an eye on the street and by the bins as there’s loads of resellable stuff available free everywhere all the time that busy or lazy people chuck out. Today by my big bin I got a very unusual designer set of metal shelving with wooden shelves in perfect condition which would cost at least £20 or £30 in most shops and in a posh shop possibly £50 or £100. Resale value second hand? Well, nothing if no one wants it but I’d expect to be able to get at least a tenner for it and possibly twenty or thirty.

Put all the stuff onto ebay, amazon and loot and learn how they work. It’s a learning curve and it takes some work and practise before you start to get the hang of it and get some results. There’s lots of info on the ebay board on this forum and ebay itself has lots of info and a forum. Amazon also has lots of info. Literally millions of people are doing this so hook up with one or two friends and friends of friends who are already off the starting block and learn what they do and what works and what doesn’t. And ask if you can team up and share some of the work.

If doing this then also try car boot sales and market stalls and again, expect to try 10 or 20 things in the hope that one or two of them are doable. All the initial test pieces that don’t work are a valid part of the exercise so don’t give up just cos the first few things don’t particularly yield results.

Doing this will also give him some focus and something constructive to do while he’s not directly applying for more jobs. There’s a limit to how much time and effort you can put into job hunting on a daily basis so learning the ins and outs of ebay, amazon, loot and car boot sales and market stalls should be a good complement to the regular activity of job hunting.

And remember that some hard working people do make a lot of money out of selling and this is definitely possible for you too if you put the hours in. And it’s more about hard work than cleverness or luck. Pretty much any product has at least some level of saleability.

I hope you regard this as a practical constructive suggestion. If you try it perhaps let us know how you get on as it might be helpful for other people. Good luck with whatever you decide.
  • Hi Gem just wanted to give you a virtual hug and say hang on in there. It doesn't sound likes your OH is scared of work so something will come along, you just have to be supportive and encouraging so that he doesn't get "down" as it's a slippery slope.

The very best thing to do is make sure he is going out and getting fresh air. It sounds such a small thing but if he is just in the house day in day out it will start to grind and he will become miserable. Just running the odd errand is great and the fresh air will do him the power of good.

I'll be keeping fingers crossed for you.

Nope conveniently they had not done that bit. He had already signed off to leave the army so not like he signed off just for them but I knew it was too good to be true!
