Hi All,

Not really sure to post this so apologies if its in the wrong place - its not really about money-saving :embarasse but it is a warning :exclamati to anyone whose kids may use play dot com

I carried out a search on play dot com yesterday which produced an unsavory search result - see my email to play.com as follows...

I would like to highlight a search which I carried out on your website this evening, for a Nintendo DS Game called "Match 3 Madness". I carried out the search using the search term "Match Mandess", which yielded two results - the "Match 3 Madness" game for the Nintendo DS, and then a second result - a down loadable MP3 track called "V 8 W**k**s - Match Race Madness".

I'm certainly no prude, however I am very aware that a child could very easily be searching for this Nintendo DS game, and would come up with the same results, which, in my mind is wholly unacceptable, especially from a nationally recognized brand such as play.com. I accept that this kind of result can happen on a Google search, but not on your own search facility.

Please could you advise how this has been allowed to happen? Please do not blame this on a "computer error" as we all know than behind everything a computer does, there as human input, therefore "computer error" is just a convenient excuse.

I have been a customer of your website for many years, and would certainly now think twice about using you or recommending you in the future - especially to people with kids.

All I received from them is two automated responses, I have now emailed a number of different addresses but have had no human response.

The reason for posting is two-fold - a warning for anyone whose kids may use play dot com - and does anyone know who I could complain to?

Cheers

David

Sorry to say, but legally, they can publish whatever they like on their website. There is no-one apart from play.com you can complain to.
    Best Regards

I don't see what the problem is. Play is a site for adults to purchase items with credit/debit cards so children shouldn't be using it to buy items.

If they are on having a browse then there is the same risk of finding something unsuitable as there is anywhere else online. As an adult I don't expect my shopping options to be compromised just incase a chld may be browsing.

Because their music is crap and generic so a shocking name is the only thing that's going to get them notices.

Perhaps you should alter that warning to anyone whose child uses the internet? Because what you have described is a both an internet and life hazard, but not a Play.com hazard specifically. If your mission is to prevent children from stumbling across examples of bad language accidentally, your attempt is going to be a short and fruitless one. Whether you like it or not examples of bad language crop up entirely legitimately in every day life, and online shopping is clearly one of those areas. The only way to guarantee that children are not exposed to bad language on the internet is to stop them using the internet altogether.
