Have you (are you able to) taken out the cushions / seat pads to see if they're damp?I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle0

I have very kindly been given a sofa bed. Its great, but it smells musty!!!
What can I do? I can't take the covers off (sewn on), the foam matteress is really pongy! Any suggestions?!? I've stuck it on the line (on a fine day) and it hasn't improved it.
Thank you in advance

We had a smelly mattress once that we were given, I sprinkled bicarb on it and left it overnight, then hoovered it off the next day. It did help!
Otherwise what about the carpet foams that you sponge in and then vacuum when dry, i bet one of them says suitable for upholstery or whatever?0 -
Hi All,
I have inherited a lovely chenille (sp?) type beige sofa which is gorgeous and looks super comfy. Only problem is it came from a very heavy smoker and unfortunately it smells. I wouldn't even say it specifically smells like fags but has a very distinctive stale whiff to it. I have the seat and back cushions airing in a bedroom, propped up against each other with the window wide open. This appears to be doing the trick and a spritz of Febreze should sort these out (shame its not summer as the washing line would have been ideal for a good blow out). The seat and back cushion covers have been through the wash and were on rinse hold for an hour or so. I haven't got these out yet but am hoping this has worked. My main problem is the main bit of the sofa. My mum has a steam cleaner that I am going to borrow but I wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to getting the whiffy smell out of this part of the sofa?

We had exactly the same problem... We used (a whole tub of) bicarbonate of soda.... sprinkle it on before bed and hoover it off in the morning... it absorbs the odour. Hope this helps. (It really does work!)

Please don't us a steam cleaner it will shrink chenille! If you can get some dry foam carpet cleaner and put into a spray bottle - give it a good light spray all over, then leave overnight then vac off in the morning - if the smell persists keep repeating untill the smell is gone DO NOT OVERWET THE FABRICBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

You describe the sofa as "lovely". Rather than risk damaging it, why not pay to have professional upholstery cleaners come in and do it.
Sometimes, it's better to pay out a bit of money rather than risk losing lots more if your diy efforts ruin the very thing you value.
Alternatively, would it be possible to hire a Rug Doctor type thing that comes with an upholstery nozzle? Have it for a whole day and have smashing clean carpets to match the lovely sofa!
I agree with Butterfly Brain - steam can be a killer and over-wetting the biggest hazard!0 -
Bicarb sounds a good idea. How about a couple of Bounce tumble drier sheets wedged underneath the cushions?

Hi lv1109. Another vote here for bicarb and a hoover
There is a thread about smelly sofas (well it is called Stinky sofas, but that's such a horrible word:rotfl:)
I will add your thread to that one later, to keep all the suggestions together
Let us know how you go:)

Thanks all for the replies and thanks to zippychick for merging with the other thread (love the title hahahaha).
Am going to get some bicarb and give that a whirl. Failing that I love the idea of the rug doctor for the day because my carpets could also do with a good going over with all the mud about at the minute (have two mud magnets, oops I mean dogs).
Will report back when I hopefully have my new fresh smelling sofa in situ!:heart2: Katie & Benjy - I'll meet you at Rainbow Bridge......:heart2:0
