I got a good tip off this board somewhere - put a couple of drops of essential oil onto a cotton wool ball and shove it in your sofa out of sight. My dog's bed is in our hallway and I put the cottonwool in the corner of the windowsill. As you come through the front door it smells lovely; before it was ugh! Especially as it's raining - my dog has quite long hair and when it gets wet it smells baaaad!0

I second the bicarbonate of soda.
It removes smells even from smelly trainers, so should manage a sofa! I don't know why or how it works though.0 -
Just wanted to say, tried the Bicarb (only left it a couple of hours)and its worked a treat,Thanks so much guys.

Anthea (I think) did one on her show the other week just using a clean flannel and some ordinary bar of soap (like you would use to wash your hands with). Her thinking was that leather is just the skin of an animal and therefore if soap is OK on human skin it is OK on leather. The before and after pics were very striking. (It may have been Kim and Aggie not Anthea, now I come to think).
Anyway, I would have thought that the soap would remove the smell, and if the TV footage was real not faked, it certainly removes the grime.
Otherwise if you want to be super-cautious you could use saddle soap which is designed specially for leather. Can't imagine it will do much for the smell though.0 -
thanks Nicki.
I will give that a try

I think ordinary soap can dry out the leather. I would try saddle soap if you can get it. It works wonders on a leather saddle, so it should be alright for a sofa.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0

I just use clean water and a sponge.0

Kim & Aggie used a duster and normal furniture polish to clean a leather sofa.
Hope this helps!)

Hi all, I am new here. I found this site on the internet while searching for ways to get rid of a damp smell.
My son has just moved into a flat for university, and we gave him a leather sofa that had been stored in our (dry, we thought) basement for a year. After a few days, the flat began to smell damp and mildewy, and we thought it was the flat until my nose took me to the sofa. It's absolutely honking. I have cleaned it with a proprietry cleaner a couple of times, and opened the base and put in a couple of charcoal fridge odour removers - the egg shaped things. It still stinks. Any ideas, and how long with the smell take to go, or will it smell like this forever??
My husband almost killed himself getting the damn thing into the flat so we don't fancy having to take it out again.
Thanks allLife.
