My computer is getting worse and worse

Options
Hi

Ive been trying to fix my computer for months and now its terrible.

Internet Explorer stopped working two days ago, firefox wont work either....

ive been trying to free up space somehow on my C drive for a while now but nothing worked...im hoping i didnt delete the system restore points as when i first tried, i did ccleaner, registry errors, cookies, delete system restore points, check for uninstalled programs still there on the C drive...

it didnt help...i cant update my anti virus software, i deleted adobe acrobat to free up space but couldnt download it again after but managed to install foxit reader...

now i have no space left...

i have anti malware software i installed when i was doing all the above points and on the first scan it found stuff but never since and i was able to update it a few days ago, i use superanti spyware and ccleaner too....avg i havent been able to update for a while but in the version i have nothing comes up...

im going to order an external hard drive today to backup all my data but what do i do with my c drive??? and internet explorer etc.?

thank you for any ideas

None of the items you listed will have liberated much disk space. Disk hogs are things like high-res photos (*.bmp, *.jpg etc), music files (*.mp3, *.flac etc), iTunes libraries, PDFs, Word Docs and suchlike.

Once you've liberated some space, download WinDirStat - this shows you what's taking up the space in graphic form, so you can see the largest files.

What's the disk size? What's the size of your C: drive? Do you have another partition on the disk, D: possibly?

How much disk space has been used?

Is your computer a desktop? If so, you won't necessarily need an external drive - you could install a secondary internal drive.

How old is the current installation? Is it Windows? After that format and reinstall the OS after you have backed up.

Why? If thing as as bad as the OP says an re installation will solve the problems a lot quicker than trying to solve them.

    i have a laptop...2 years old...

all my pdfs and music and photos are on my D drive on purpose to keep my C drive free, but it hasn't worked....

all the space on C is used, it varies from minute to minute from 0kb to 2.51mb, every time i check its different...

i dont know the total size of the C drive or D drive, will check when i get home, using library computer....D drive has loads and loads of free space which is why a few months ago, all the disk hog data i put on the D drive....

i was thinking i should back up when my external hard drive arrives and re install windows... i have Vista but didnt get a cd with the computer, buy an installation CD and use that?

    thank you.

If you didn't get a disk with it, it will have a factory restore partition.

Use windirstat (and explorer, search for big files) as suggested to find where the space has gone

Given the tone of the OP, I don't think baldly telling them to reformat their HD, with barely any other advice on how to backup, etc. is a good plan.

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)
