I'm having a few probs with mine - it doesn't coonect automatically when the PC boots, the MSS icon in the system in greyed out unless I close the program and start it again from program files, I now have 2 network drives in my computer, one of is always disconnected and the drag and drop feature doesn't work - it just drops the files into the folder I drop it.

Am I doing something glaringly wrong? Or should I try to uninstall and reinstall?

    I'm using Maxtor 2.6.2 firmware.
  • Beginning to think that although this is a clever bit of kit...it's fundamentally pants.

For example I wanted to backup my entire MP3 collection of my home PC (about 10Gig)....it took hours & hours as it goes over Wifi ( my PC connects to my router using 802.11g...the drive is obviously connected to my router via ethernet)...as opposed to say 10-20 minutes for a normal USB external drive.

I could just about tolerate that *BUT* get a load of this....having waited hours for the transfer to complete...I decide to move the location of the music files on my new drive. therefore select all, copy & paste to the new location on my new drive...guess what it's taking absolutely hours again. This doesn't compute I'm not moving the MP3s off my new Maxtor drive, but simply relocating them on the same MSS drive...so why is this simple move taking hours?! Surely it should be just modifying the drive's look up table?!

It's almost as if they are coming back to my home PC & then back onto the new disk drive (in other words twice as long as the original transfer).

    What a festival of suck.

    Not impressed.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Hank - saw a comment on t'web about this - apparently it does move files over the network (disk to PC then back to disk as you suspected). Not sure if this is connected with it's (allegedly) "smart locating" (or whatever) which attempts to put MP3s in "Music", word docs in "Documents" etc.

ps - haven't started using mine yet - just been looking round for hints and tips etc.

Chuffy I don't use that 'm' thing, instead i just 'map' network drive from windows explorer which is the ip address, usually 192.168.0.something [u can find this on your router status page] and check the 'reconnect on startup' box, when windows boots up you should always be connected. Advantage this way is you will always see it as an option in 'save as' within applications.

i'm getting my philips slm5500 wireless media streamer tomorrow then we'll see exactly what this badboy can do

well take it back then there are a bunch of people dying to get their hands on it :D

seriously though when you're testing something out in early stages, you don't move all your media over........play for a bit if it behaves then full steam ahead lol. otherwise (and i speak from some experience unfortunately) you'll just get frustrated!

I got it to stream to my Roku Soundbridge without issue (ie cutting my PC outta the equation)

In fact it was doing the above that made me wanna move my MP3 files to another unique parent directory.....I have a fair few synth sounds in wav format (albeit in a differnt directory), the problem here is that the MSS drive scans the whole sub directory structure for anything in audio format...therefore I was getting my synth sounds showing up as audio tracks on my Roku soundbridge. Therefore I thought, no probs I'll just move my music over to a special newly created shared directory...this is when I've realised that a cut/paste can be measured in calendar days instead of in an instant.

this thing takes it up the USB port sideways

    Ditto XboX with XBMC :D

Can anybody with an XboX360 confirm its media player will work with the "plus" upgraded MSS's uPnP server?
  • Hi gooseye,

MSS + with its inbuilt Mediabolic media server does not work with xbox 360. You need to install TwonkyVision server on your NAS drive. And you can only install TwonkyVision on OPENMSS version obtained from http://www.openmss.org/. Once you do this, your xbox 360 will display your NAS drive as a XP machine and you will be able to stream Music, Pic and WMV video directly to your xbox 360 from MSS NAS without a PC.

Ooo, useful. I currently have my xbox streaming content off my Maxtor drive now via XBMC (using openmss firmware) but also have a 360 which I'd like to link up. Are there any good links to how this Twonkyvision works? Sounds like just what I need.

Anyone else done anything fancy with this openmss stuff and their drive?

As far as issues go, it's had a fair few teething problems, but all seems fine now. A quick reset and starting again sorted things out.
