    DO NOT UPDATE THE FIRMWARE.

It has a bug in it which means the fans will be running at full speed 24/7, resulting in a very noisy device!

Where did you hear that (no pun intended) or is it an observation on your part?

I'd have to say...the first thing I did was update the firmware to V2.62 but I'd have to agree, that pesky little fan on the back is a little noisy.

Which firmware version should be used - are there versions about where the fan only kicks in when needed?!

My own observation , now found others experience the same problem.

Want to go back to an older firmware now but can't find it!

  • i've been watching this thread for a couple of days.

i went out and bought the 200gig one for £69.91 from edinburgh today.

first thing i did - update the firmware. i can't remember what the fan sounded like before - but now that 1.2.2 is posted here i might go back and compare.

for your info 2.4.2 is still on the maxtor ftp site:

    ftp://ftpdownload.maxtor.com/pub/

you may well be right but that comment I believe applies to 2.4.2. the openmss version of the firmware has such comments in the changelog.

I've installed the openmss version of 2.6.2, which seems to be just fine. I guess people will tell me when they go back down to the old firmware. Even got twonky installed on it, you can put loads on [webserver, torrent downloader] but I haven't got round to it

When I enable the mss media server it only appears to serve wma files correctly to my wifi radio? Can't figure out if this is the wifi radio's issue or the MSS's.

    Guys,

For those of you who have bought Maxtor Shared Storage and would like to play with it, https://www.openmss.org is a great site.

    Cheers
  • couldn't agree more, i have the 2.6.2-openmss1-rc2 firmware installed and it is pretty damned quiet. the fan does run all the time, but its quiet.

I will try that firmware out then - Was reluctant to at first but since I can roll back to the original if need be...
