Hi
I have bought the odd thing cos i think it's a bargain and i use my pp money cos i don't class it as real money IYKWIM!!:o when item arrives it very rarely fit's or looks awfull (have had some good buys).
I just resell when the time is right and am happy if i break even.
I am now saving my pp money for xmas and then towards a holiday so that i have a goal and i think twice before bidding.
Perhaps you could set a goal or even join the november ebay challenge.0 -
I had a similar problem a couple of years back, only figures were much lower but considering I'm a single mother it was money I couldn't afford.
All my spare time was spent trawling through the auctions and pretty soon I had a double fitted wardrobe full of tarty tops I wouldnt be seen dead in, trousers that wouldn't do up and 5" high heel shoes/boots I couldn't walk in.
I live with my mum who saw the parcels coming and I'd fib that things cost £2when they really they were closer to £40. It was only when I had some shipped in from the US that she could actually see the value and even then I'd be saying "I don't know why it says that on I only paid a tenner".
It recently started happening again when I lost my job and started selling stuff on ebay and like OP I started spending away the pp money I'd built up which was supposed to be for Christmas. I then realised I was just swapping one pile of tat for another!!
I now focus on getting everyday things the cheapest I can find and have managed to get Christmas sorted (when I was working I this was never done before mid Dec!) Things like the Pigsback and Greasypalm satisfy my addictive tendancies now - I just make sure I don't spend out.0 -
hi
i like you had the same problem , i think it came from the thrill of a bargain i just could not resisit , like you i did not need the items i bought on most occasions but what kept me buying was the fact i did get some amazing bargains for example brand new pod boots mens size 10 for my son for school £15 and i bought a hoover bagless brand new £28 , little miss naughty dressing gown age 15/16 new with tags that said £25 i paid £5.50 and all these items were including postage so you can how easy it is to get addicted to buying and for about a year i was like this and i was starting to spend far more than i made and also paying far more than i meant to.
But now i only buy what i need and i set myself price limits and i dont go over them and i save all the money i make for instance i have make about £120 this month i have only bought what i needed this month which was a winter coat for my daughter new with tags it cost me £11.50 and i have nearly £900 saved now and i am replacing my carpets throughout with that and as i have already replaced my three piece and bought a new bathroom and thats all within 3 years , its like my yearly treat or my christmas pressie to myself and i still have enough to buy things i NEED and only what i NEED throughout the year.
so like fidget says focus on the things you need and give yourself something to save for it could be anything from a car to a depoist for yr own home.
you can do it , goodluck

So glad I am not alone! It is just so easy to get addicted to ebay - I think everyone likes getting those little packages, I know I'm on first name terms with most of the posties round here, some don't even knock they just open my door and pop them in!
It's especially addictive if you're not working and are pretty much stuck at home with kids - its so nice to trawl and find things for yourself and your family, justified with the idea that it's such a bargain.
I have sold a few things but I spend just as quickly as it comes in - it was supposed to be towards my xmas fund but then the kids needed trainers or whatever and there's the money sitting in paypal - easy peasy I will just do a couple of clicks and they're on their way!
I think you have to be really strong willed and focussed to not spend! And sadly that isn't me either!!!0 -
I am just like you charliegirl - at home with baby so not a lot else to do! I have tried to replace the addiction with Pigsback and bits n bobs like that - I also try to come on this forum most of the time im online as it gives me a bit more motivation to stop. And i love the chalenges to save money in different ways.
I havent even been on Ebay at all today and thats a first since i joined up, so im feeling proud of myself! Please keep up the enthusiasm for me - i really appreciate it.
It is a comforting feeling that I am not the only one - and that alot of you guys have been there and come through well!
It really does feel like its not real money though when you see a balance on PP, or even when you see a 'bargain' for about a fiver - They mount up and cost a damn fortune.

Ok - has anyone had the problem where the 'Thanks' button doesnt seem to work? I wanna thank you all but i'm having no luck. I've also got a little message in the bottom left corner of my screen saying 'Error on page' - I'm baffled!Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0

Try seeing if there is a Sure Start with activities in your area. Great for you and the little one to get you out and about a bit more.
I only buy with what I have in my paypal account from sales (after paying my Ebay fees etc), my rule I made for myself, stops me going daft.
Maybe try car boot if they aren't selling on Ebay.
Also think what you could have bought instead of what you have. £700 could go towards a fab holiday.
Also make sure you keep enough for the tax man if you sell a lot of new things and buy to sell, lots been stung lately for not declaring the earnings. One day I might be more organised...........

Wow - i didnt realise people were getting done for tax unless they were a business seller (shop). Thanks for that will do that. I dont thinnk i'll get any probs though coz it is all mine that i have bought for me, or of from the days when i was an Ann Summers rep at 19, so i think i paid all the neccessary tax back then. I will start to keep a proper record just in case though!
SureStart in my area is miles away - i keep phoning them and leaving messages but they never get back to me - They had a baby signing class i really wanted to do but i didnt know the venue - I wont give up there though! Im really interested in doing a garage sale but dont know where to start with it. Gonna think of planning it!
Thank you!Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0 -
We should set ourselves a strict ebay challenge! Only spend if you have funds in your pp account. Otherwise you just can't buy. That's my aim from now on.
Also, my 2007 ebay challenge is to aim to make £1 per day and leave it in pp so I have enough to buy Christmas presents next year.
Good luck all!2014 GC: £957.61/ £54000 -
I think that's a brilliant idea !!:Ttallullahbelle wrote:Also, my 2007 ebay challenge is to aim to make £1 per day and leave it in pp so I have enough to buy Christmas presents next year.
