The Giving Up Smoking Thread - Part 3

Hi topsyturphy and haven't you done so very well!!! I think jammy has answered your question perfectly, do what you're happy with, but don't overdo it. Do you like drinking cranberry juice or is it to help you only? If you're not enjoying it then why not try something different..I've no ideas at present and have real problems with our water too! It's ok if you drink it as soon as you've run it, but leave it for just 10 minutes and it tastes disgusting!!! I'm sure the water boards are in cahoots with the bottled water people - making it taste as it does so everyone will have to splurge out on the bottle! If only we could afford to!
There's just one thing I'd ask re the lack of energy - are you eating enough foods of substance? If not, look at your diet and cut out any junk food or add energy making foods to your diet. Be patient and be kind to yourself, we're all different and your time will come when the energy levels will shoot up, for now - be so proud of all you've done!!! Oh topsyturphy, I've just read your last post and what a difference in your 'voice'!Well done your Ds's and your DH!!! Isn't it just great when a family love each other enough to take time out to care and spend time with each other!!! Of all the things we can give each other...the most precious of all - is or time! Have a wonderful few days and cherish them all, this is exactly what you need! :j
Re Sally - I've heard nothing at all, and the birth date was the 11th so she (the little one) could still be late, but that being the case I'd have thought she'd have been here with us. Sally, if you're looking in, please talk to us and let us know what's what? We're not nosey, just missing you and wanting to hear about you both - please!:)
Hi CompBunny, I'm so pleased you've recognised your feelings as those being very much related to grieving...though I had put it in the PM! Never mind about that. Anyway, I can promise you that it won't last long at all and your head will soon get itself sorted out. We spend so much time thinking what smoking has done to our bodies and often forget that it's bound to affect us mentally, until we kick Nick into touch!! Very well done on your DH..a tip though, men often find it a smidgen easier to quit than us girls, but not all of them. Good for him though! He'll certainly gain from freeing himself of nicotine, but that doesn't mean you should have a shot too, just in case you're one of those who needs to have the patches to wean you off, beware is all I'd advise! It would be marvellous if your DH could have it all under control before a job comes along....these things are sent for a reason so help him be happy for now that not having a job is a bit of a bonus!
There's nothing at all sad about using PMs as a "tool kit", that's why we send them!!! You are one of the wise ones who us them in the most perfect of ways - very admirable indeed!!! You're doing fantastically with the walking, and just as soon as you're able - step it up a gear and walk as briskly as possible, that'll help more endorphins to come into your brain and make you feel so much better and give you more zest. Dogs are great for pushing is on out - even when it's tipping it down! Keep chatting to us CBunny - we will get you through this - though it'll be you doing all the work!!!
What a time it is when folk reach out for help and receive it, we all need a hand to get us through things, but we need to let folk know first, and that's why this thread is to be cherished - people care so very much for each other! Press on everyone, you're doing just great whether you've come an hour, a day, a week or more - you're all on a terrific journey - about the best one you could ever take!

Champix Day 18 - 4 days smoke free
Hi all
Well, took a while but caught up with the thread!
Saw nurse on Friday for my carbon monoxide reading and it was 1... wahey - had been 26!!!!! 2 weeks earlier, so that's good.
As I've said in earlier posts I didn't smoke some days and then had a couple on other days (even though I didn't want them), can't understand why?!?!? Anyway, thought to myself 'I can't have one before I see the nurse and have my CM reading' So I didn't and then didn't bother afterwards or since... so I have been smoke free for 4 days now.
Started having some really weird and vivid dreams and very unsettled sleep. Wake up startled every 1-2 hours! I'm knackered!
Maybe next time I see the nurse I should ask to go on the lower dose - but I'm worried that I'll get cravings. Does anyone know if this is likely? I'm not having cravings, but now and then do think about smoking and do my old smoking routines out of habit... as said by a lot of you, it takes a while to 'reprogramme' yourself psychologically.
And must admit that I have been super emotional, but my sister says it's not half as bad as when I quit before using patches... and I know that I'll get through this stage (again!) Haven't smashed anything up, but did have to go in the bathroom for 5 minutes to sort myself out and calm down the other day:wall:
'Quit rage' - just about sums it up! Have felt much calmer since then and am planning other things to do to try and change my routine.
Well done to everyone! Some of us may be acting a bit strange at the mo... but at least we're smoke free :j0 -

I've done not much more than think about it at the moment, have to get through the rest of this month with very little money and trying not to spend on anything else unless absolutely unnecessary and I need some decent training shoes.
Feeling a little shell-shocked and thanking my lucky stars that we're not living in Christchurch or I woiuld surely have been back on the fags this afternoon. Just awful, is all I can say. It's one thing when you see this stuff beamed to your TV from another country, quite something else when it's so close to home. All we can do is watch the endless hours of news and watch the stories as they continue to unfold.Mortgage

Janie, a CM reading of 1 after it having been 26 is absolutely brilliant!! Marvellous news!!! :T:T Habit and having some with you is the reason you had some even though you didn't want them, and I wonder just how many of those we've all been guilty of having over the years! Very well done on not having had any for 4 days, you're on the way Janie!!! Try not to worry about the vivid dreams, apparently you'll grow to love em - or at least the fellars did, not in a sexual way either (it's ok, I know as I asked!), but in a loving them way though they wouldn't say more!
I'd suggest you stick with what you're prescribed, you'll soon adapt, and if tiredness really is a problem, snatch quarter of an hour in the evening or afternoon - no longer though or it'll mess up your night's sleep - as if it's possible!!!
Try and get rid of the emotions, we're meant to after all, so use a pillow to scream into or throw something around HARD....that won't do any damage!! Always give way to tears!! Be very chuffed at all you've done Janie, it's gret!!! :j How true is the following:
"Well done to everyone! Some of us may be acting a bit strange at the MO... But at least we're smoke free." :j
Good Heavens above, Kiwi, that is just terrible!!!! It takes some sinking in and that's only from the little I've seen from the link you put on! I do so hope no one else dies as a result of it all, and that all those trapped make it out and to safety very soon!! All the very best for you and those affected, Kiwi, my thoughts are with and for you all. Well done on more days ticked off on you journey.

Well done :T:T I've done the bathroom routine as well at least once - ran old water over my wrists and hands and splashed my face. Somehow, it calmed me down. A lot of people have the weird dreams but they do pass fairly quickly. Keep up the good work and we'll all cheer you on :j:jFeeling a little shell-shocked and thanking my lucky stars that we're not living in Christchurch or I woiuld surely have been back on the fags this afternoon. I thought of you this morning! There's not a lot we can say or do really except that we are thinking about the people who are caught up in it, though I am relieved that friends in NZ have all reported in safe and well - even ones who live just 3 miles away from Christchurch centre.
I was thinking about something Compbunny said about grieving. I think one of the things I need to think about is that we might need to give ourselves a little more TLC than we tend to. TopsyTurphy was commenting on the ups and downs of energy and I've had the same.
Perhaps we need to actually concentrate a little more on the tremendous accomplishment we are achieving and give ourselves pats on the back instead of just trying to forget cigs.:D
I hope all are well. I'm waiting as anxiously as the rest of you for news of Sally.
Keep going and pat yourself on the back (I disclaim all responsibility for dislocated shoulders :D:D:D:cool:)But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?0 -
Kiwi - Have watched the news, it is a terrible tradegy. I too hope there is no more and that they manage to get out anyone that is trapped.0

Such terrible news, was only just over a year ago I was in NZ and felt several earthquakes at the time. I always felt a little excited I had felt one but in all honesty seeing this now, it must be a harrowing experience to be in a big one. I hope they find more survivors than victims
Glad all my friends in ChCh are ok though

Hi, my fiance and I are stopping smoking together this Friday. Fraser is using Champix and I'm using patches and micro tabs. Weighed up the pros and cons of stopping together. Pro - there wont be any temptation if the other one is smoking and we will be able to give each other support, cons - we may end up being extremely irratable with each other  any advice would be greatly appreciated x0

Hey guys!
<sneaks in>
Really sorry I haven't dropped in lately, just rush moved into a new place which was quite stressfull but I'm still on the wagon. I can't really say I think about smoking anymore to be honest
Well done to everyone too - we are all doing great.
Be it 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month or one year - its all an achievement.
I don't have the quit meter on all the time so was like "woah 1 month odd has passed already" when I looked just a minute ago
Couldn't have done it without the help of this thread, thanks guys (especially Sue)
Keep going everyone

Hi babylove and a very warm welcome to the thread!:D You're both looking at quitting in a very sensible way, I'm sure many folk fail to make it if they have an OH who still smokes. It must be so very hard. Still, you're ready to battle on and help each other through it and we all wish you the very best in doing so. If you have any problems then this is the place to air them; we all help each other and whether it's a good day or a bad one, come on and tell us about it, it really dose help!
Hi there Ads!!!:D I'm so very pleased you've popped in to let us know how you're getting on. It's hard when you've stopped and then have to move, hubby and I did a few months after I'd quit, but you just push yourself on and remember that we DO NOT want to have to go through it all again!!! Congratulations, Ads, you're doing brilliantly!! :T:T
Well done everyone. Stay positive and focused and look forward to yur new and far better life!
