    To format it, you would either have to take the hard disk out, or use a bootcd/floppy/usb, if that hasn't been done, use the recovery partition to restore to factory settings (unless you need to recover data)

    I'm aware of that thanks. The important point is the OP needs to post more information of what has happened, and what happens when they switch it on, the story is confused and vague.

  • It's not really clear what's the matter with this machine. Can you copy the FAT error message ad verbatim for us?

    You may only need to restore the bootloader.

    I'll try and get this when ds gets home later.

    Actually, I have addressed as many questions as possible when I have been on line. Yes I appreciate all the advice I am receiving BUT I am not sat next to pc with bated breath. Sorry
