car insurance has doubled!!

Options
Hi! Iv just received my renewal, last years fully comp was £600, thi year its £1020!!!

I would have had 4 years no claims, but some little !!!! vandalised my car this year, and apparently the insurer deducts 2 years no claims for vandalism claims.

It also increased as someone reversed into me, and as i was concerned the person responsible might have given me fake info i informed my insurer (she didnt but had my oh not been in the car she would have done off, as she was halfway out the carpark after caving my front end in before being stopped so i was understandably cautious) I cant understand the rise as it was non fault but it was explained that even non fault claims increase premiums as you are perceived to have put your car in a risky situation. I wont be informing them next time!!

more of a vent than anything, I have been a customer of this company for 8 years, I asked outright if there was a discount i could have and to their credit i was given 2 month free (reducing premium to £900) but a £400 increase is rediculous!!!

+£400 is painful! Try some of Martin's articles on cheaper car insurance, get a better quote, then call back your insurers saying company xyz are offering £xyz for the same cover, and to save you having to swap, will they meet that figure?

    Hiya paddy,

I would, however, oddly I used money supermarket and the cheapest i could get was £950. the SAME insurer im with now using the online quoting system wanted £1600, not sure how that happened. I checked the details were the same as my renewal.

On my renewal it states I drive 8000 miles per year, I asked to reduce this to 2000 as I work from home, and was told that too increased the premium, as i wouldnt be benefitting from "driving experience" lol. so the advisor left it as is.

Hmmm may I suggest if 2000 miles/year is realistic if you WFH etc, try a car club/taxis - you'll save on insurance, tax, MOT, depreciation, repairs and frankly stress ;-)

Unfortunately, regardless of who was to blame, you have had 2 claims in a year - from yours for the vandalism and from the other person's for the bump, which you state you had also told your insurer about 'just in case'. These show the insurer that you are someone who is likely to make claims (however justified) and therefore will push up your premiums. Just out of interest, how much did you claim for the vandalism? I hope you won't have the same thing happen again, but it might be worth paying for that work yourself if necessary if you especially want to keep your insurance low.

Also, might be worth trying another comparison site. I'm just buying a moped and one site found me quotes starting at £155 whilst another had quotes from just £74! Also can be worth opting for a higher voluntary excess to see if that gives you better quotes - ie it may be that you could get a quote for £800 if you offered an extra £200 voluntary excess.

    It's not doubled...it gone up by 70%.

If it had doubled it would be £1200.

thanks for that constructive post, i dont care much for maths. Maybe i should edit the title to "my car insurance has varied in amount almost equating to double, but as i dont care to post to exact pounds and pennies for the sake of argument i will just say doubled"

Cecilia, Im unsure of the amount of the vandalism claim, as they collected the car and did everything. But basically, the back windscreen was smashed in, all of the rear lights, and the brick used was scraped all along the side of my car, which is a mercedes sports car, so I am presuming that the cost of the claim was pretty expensive. All I paid was a £50 excess

And you do realise that if you don't inform your insurance company of any accidents/vandalism etc in the future they will screw you from here to eternity if you have a legitimate claim

A similar thing happened to me.

Insurance companies will load your premium for all claims even if they are not your fault.

I sued the person that hit my car for the increase in premium that they were responsible for and got a payment from their insurers.

You need to ask you insurers how much that claim added to your premium and sue for this. You also need to ask for the increased premium inthe future as this is claimable too.

It's a no claims bonus, not a no blame bonus.

Although the problems were not your fault, you still made a claim and are deemed to be more of a risk, than a claim free person.

It's tough I know. It happened to me when I claimed because someone crashed into the back of my car when I was waiting in a short queue of traffic at a roundabout.
Here I go again on my own....
